This book struck as personal chord for me, as my father grew up in the early baby boomer generation and often told me stories about his childhood. Bryson streamlines the idea of an idealist utopian postwar society in such a way as to make my heart ache. The book paints the past in such a perfect light, it can easily make one pine for the past. The ending is heartfelt and bittersweet. A great read. I have no problems with this book, only the world.

Personally, I prefer Dorothy Allison's non-fiction feminist and lesbian essays, as well as her more directly autobiographical pieces about her childhood, but of course Bastard Out of Carolina is a classic. She pulls race, class, sex, and sexuality all together in a way that is more than political rhetoric. It speaks to the actual experience of the oppressed with all it's contradictions and uncomfortable truths.

Well, now I know that Terry Pratchett is just not my cup of tea. I'm not crazy about Neil Gaiman, either, so who knows why I love Good Omens so much.

I enjoyed The Kite Runner so much that I preordered this as soon as humanly possible. Khaled Hosseini is a particularly gifted author that focuses on particularly powerful source material. Both of his (fictional) books are set against the (nonfiction) historical background of Afghanistan. while the The Kite Runner focuses on a family that leaves Afghanistan during the decades of turmoil and returns after the U.S. invasion after 9/11, A Thousand Splendid Suns focuses on two women who don't have that chance. There's a lot of nuance to this book: fundamentalism is often the root cause of much of the pain in this book (and there's a lot of it). On the other hand, some of the most beautiful scenes in the book come from humble, heartfelt faith. This very human story is set against a subtle (and appropriate, I think) backdrop that reminds us that much of the pain (the warlords, the Taliban, the soviet invasion) are the result of foreign meddling: by the Russians, the Americans, Iran, and countless others. This book therefore contains complementary messages: love & friendship beget beauty in even the harshest of circumstances and The actions & inactions that we take as a nation can result in unimaginable suffering.

I really enjoyed this book, but for some reason I struggled to get through it. It is very detailed and grabs your attention so you don't want to skim read any of it. This story of a prostitute who rises up from the streets but continues to have a dark twist throughout the novel.

It is a book with controversial ideas. It has so many historic, architectural and symbolic information in form of a story. I recommend this book.

Wrong book, or wrong time. Either way, couldn't get into it.

I picked it up because it is one of the few books of required by the columbia school of journalism for all students. This is a quick love letter to the city of New York in the 40s. The ending thoughts are somewhat creepily clairvoyant.

about how people still remain alive in some ways even after they die through their productions (art, literature, etc) and through the minds of those they touch along the way.
