I won an advance copy of “These Things Hidden” in a Goodreads giveaway (which was a complete and unexpected thrill!)… but will admit I was a little worried when I saw that the book was coming from Harlequin. (Would it sport a windswept, half-naked Fabio on the cover? Would I be embarrassed to read it on the train?) For many of us who grew up in the 80’s and giggled over the Harlequins sitting on our mothers’ shelves (not MY mother of course), Harlequin has always been associated with romances of a “less chaste” variety, shall we say (not that there’s anything wrong with that). TO ALL YOU READERS THAT WERE UNDER THE SAME IMPRESSION, LISTEN UP! Harlequin is not just for your lovelorn Aunt Mildred. This was a great book! I received my package – and out popped a beautiful quality trade paperback, with an intriguing cover. Better yet, the story inside turned out to be engaging. As the title suggests, it is a book about secrets best left buried… about memories best forgotten. As the story unfolds, however, both the characters and the reader are reminded that, while you can try to outrun your past, your actions will inevitably catch up. Told from the different perspectives of four female main characters, the secret of how each is connected to each other through a little boy is revealed slowly – piece by piece. The chapters alternate between the viewpoints of these four very different women, until the reader has a full picture of what happened one terrible day when a single event and its consequences would change all of their lives forever. While the author dropped a hint or two that may have been a little obvious along the way (without revealing too much and ruining it), this book was a page-turner with an unexpected twist at the end that genuinely surprised me. Harlequin, you have just earned a new customer!
