What a great story

"A woman of seven and twenty...can never hope to feel or inspire affection again, and if her home be uncomfortable, or her fortune small, I can suppose she might bring herself to submit to the offices of a nurse, for the sake of the provision and security of a wife. In his marrying such a woman therefore there would be nothing unsuitable. It would be a compact of convenience, and the world would be satisfied. In my eyes it would be no marriage at all, but that would be nothing. To me it would seem only a commercial exchange, in which each wished to be benefited at the expense of the other." https://soyourfriendlikestoread.wordp...

A romantic ghost story that didn't engage me. I skipped to the end just to finish it.

Don't get me started on how fucking sick I am of hearing about how Philip Roth is 1) old, 2) Jewish, 3) impotent. I fucking heard you the first 30 times, dude! Wrap it up.

A thriller that builds and builds. Brilliant, unsettling, amazing. *Spoiler Alert* "As I sleep, my mind will erase everything I did today. I will wake up tomorrow as I did this morning. Thinking I have a whole lifetime of choice ahead of me..." Christine begins to keep a journal, to remember her life and herself. Her doctor calls her each day to remind her where she hides it. She doesn't trust her husband, but her reasoning seems unfair. It's not until much later in the book when her claims that he's lying to her start to feel like a threat. There are hints of dishonesty, but her lack of memory leave holes in reality, and I wasn't sure who could be trusted. I loved the build-up and unraveling of the mystery. Intensly introspective and even unstable, A nineteenth century female narrator is writing down her own story. The subversion does not scream it's own devices, but it's all there. Moreover, it's sublime.

I've learned that novels in prose are "outsider" books. The poets don't acknowledge them as true poetry and novelists don't accept the shortcuts of the form. But ... sometimes I'm really in the mood for just an essence of a thing. Ludie was from a small southern town, married too young, and had too many children. Through Rylant I really saw how she viewed the world. Some of the lines were beautiful: "Ludie ... knew the pain of being more than the world would ever see ..." There is an ache to this story that pulled me in. As an adult, it resonated with me. As a children's book, I'm not sure.

It's quite clear to me that Robert Ludlum's best work occurred during the 1970s ("The Holcroft Covenant," "The Gemini Contenders" and my personal favorite "The Matarese Circle" just to name a few). This is another winner that ranks right up there with the rest of his stuff. A great, gripping historical fiction thriller where - unlike his later work - the plot thickens as the hero gets chased. Rarely are 446 densely written pages as fun to read as this was.
