From her terrible marriage, the Japanese invasion of China, and the death of her children, Winnie must tell Pearl the secrets that shame her the most. And only when the mother's past is revealed, does Pearl feel the confidence to divulge her own secret. The wonderful thing about Amy Tan is the voices she gives her characters. For she chooses narrators that are not only skilled at story-telling, you feel you could reach out and touch them. For much of this novel, Winnie is the narrator. There are times when she addresses you directly, as if you are her daughter. This is so marvelous, because the reader is drawn into and becomes a part of the story. And what a story. The history alone makes this book worth reading, but then Tan adds something more - characters that make you weep and laugh. And it's steeped in it's Chinese identity. A perfect novel.

** spoiler alert ** This was a really good, if slightly disturbing read. I went through a couple of reviews before I decided to read this book and was pretty much prepared to suffer from Stockholm Syndrome. Yet, I didn't. Did I feel sorry for Ty at certain points throughout the book? Yes, I certainly did. He had a horrible childhood and went through some really bad experiences. But that is not an excuse for stalking a girl for years and then eventually abducting her. Did I find myself melting a little alongside Gemma when he had some of his tender moments? Yes I did, but usually shortly after, he either had a violent outbreak or said something that was just utterly creepy. And at no point throughout the book did I hope for a happily-ever-after between the two of them. And yes, he did save her life a few times, but wasn't he the one to put her in those situations in the first place by kidnapping her and putting her in a desert in the middle of nowhere. He did get a plus-point when he stayed with her in the end, knowing that this would be most likely the end of his freedom, but I still didn't want him to get away with what he'd done. Do I hope, like Gemma, that eventually, after serving his time and hopefully getting some help he'll be able to return to the Separates to live happily? Yes, I think I do. Well, maybe I suffered a tiny bit of Stockholm Syndrome.

Arthur Cooper was a real person who, as a young man, escaped slavery in Virginia and went north to Massachusetts, where he married a free-born African-American woman, had several children, and moved to Nantucket Island, where in 1822 he was nearly captured by slave catchers but rescued by the Quaker community. The narrator of this novel is a fictional Quaker child, ten-year-old Phebe Folger. Arthur's wife, Mary, is hired by Phebe's father to care for her mother, bedridden since a carriage accident several months ago. Phebe has many concerns present in all children. She worries for her mother and resents her older sister's efforts to educate her. Phebe describes several months of her life as she gets to know the Cooper family. When the family is in danger of being captured, Phebe helps to save them. This was an inspiring novel about how a group of people, including young children, saw a great evil (slavery) and did whatever they could to prevent it. Middle grade readers who enjoy historical fiction are sure to enjoy it.

Great story telling from an unusual perspective. Ive worked with autistic children, although not closely and it was very interesting to gain some insight on the monologue that might be running through their heads. Of course I loved the inclusion of dogs into the story. A great quick read.

This book reminded me of the 2007 movie "The Invisible" where a teenager is beaten up, left for dead and his soul searches for his body. In this book, the teen girl is in a car accident with her family, leaves her body while at the scene and discovers her parents' lifeless bodies. She then spends the remainder of the book trying to decide whether to stay on Earth or to just let go. Beautifully written. My main problem was with the tense change -- the story is in present tense, but when the protaganist speaks of her past, she talks in past tense -- of course, but sometimes the change was jarring to me. All in all a good read for teens (and adults) who like to weep and like a complex story.
