This is a fun Victorian fantasy novel aimed primarily at teenage girls, but I found it enjoyable anyway. It is a fairly fast read of a young Victorian girl raised in India, but sent to a finishing school outside of London when here mother is killed. At school she learns that her mother had been a member of a secret society of women called the Order who are protectors of the magic in the Realms. Adventure follows.

Kate is smart, snarky, and already has a plan for her future. This plan involves working as a trainer for the school football team...it gives her experience before college, and a chance to check out football star Aaron. She's definitely a take charge kind of character, especially after she realizes that she may have played a role in the zombification of a large percent of the football team. The football star wasn't a jerk, hurrah. I was happy that Kate didn't spend her time crushing on a guy who was going to treat her badly. I also think that Jonah, Kate's brother, may have been my favorite character. He tried to protect his family, and was both dorky and awesome. I don't think it's too spoilery to tell you that not everyone survives. I won't say who/how people perish, but it actually made it an interesting zombie book. I mean, it really isn't that fun to read about a zombie epidemic that doesn't actually have consequences. I feel that I should also mention that the zombies were slow. Personal preference, I hate fast zombies. They scare the living daylights out of me. I will say that this one was really short. I read it within a few hours, and I wish there had been more. On the other hand, everything fit really well into the story, so adding length would have been unnecessary, and may have altered the flow of the story. Overall, it was a zombie book that was both surprising and entertaining.

Again, the good stuff is almost exactly cancelled out by the bad stuff. The two stories (in Oxford and on station Q24) are both rather good, but they each suffer from being forced together in one narrative, even if the counterpoints are needed for the story to work. The central idea - that changing a significant event in a "stable" era will cause a major temporal paradox - is nicely explored, with the contrast between the actions of the "President" in assassinating a political figure who is doing it for selfish reasons, and the actions of the Doctor in trying to save the station, but they both contribute to the plans of the villain. I rather liked the slight twist in the story towards the end, although it robs us of a very interesting character with a good backstory who could have been used again. I must admit that I didn't feel that it belonged to the same sort of story arc as Blood Heat though - a short prologue and epilogue do not really justify it.

Though it’s not packed with action, the stories of this quirky bunch are quietly affecting. In the end, this is a sweet and poignant tale of people trying to trade anxiety for hope and find the answers to their dreams.

Loved it, although sentimental, and looking forward to the sequel. Felt this ended just as the action was about to begin. Am not loving this '3 book deal' that lots of authors are doing at the moment, i.e. taking a novel and stretching it to cover 3 parts in order to milk more revenue from sales....I do like a novel to be the complete story and not just an installment.
