An interesting sci fi book i just finished. I was sad that the author made connections between his story strands, but didn't give me any follow through on those connections. Instead they were simply there as details discovered very late in the book, while the whole time I was wondering "what do these stories have to do with one another and why am I hearing them together?" and then was let down.

Minding Frankie is the story of little Frankie Lynch whose mother died as she was giving birth. Her mother tells Noel Lynch that he is the father not long before she dies. A drunk who is unhappy in his work, he works hard to pull himself together for Frankie's sake. Helping, and occasionally, hindering him, are Binchy's usual cast of loveable, quirky characters - his parents who are obssessed with building a statue of Saint Jarleth, his long lost American cousin Emily who has just appeared, and those irrepressible twins. Everyone pitches in with advice and babysitting help until a cold and efficient social worker threatens to put Frankie in foster care. Minding Frankie is standard Maeve Binchy fare which is to say magic. As always there is the unusual but thoroughly engaging cast of characters, the lessons in love, and the heartwarming ending. The twins and Muttie provide plenty of humor to lighten things up. Reading this book is like crawling into a warm bed on a cold winter night, bringing comfort and contentment.

It was a little bit of a slow start, but it definitely picked up towards the end. I heard the book was twisted and dark, but I was not prepared for how twisted and dark it was; dark and disturbing, but not too bad.

Things I liked: setting in Israel, subject of forensic anthropology. Thinks I didn't care for: dialog almost too naturalistic; pacing relied too much on cliff hangers at end of chapter.

Another book club pick and a real treat. I would never have stumbled upon this story on my own, I'll bet. We selected the book based on the title of the book, synopsis, and author's photo (all were "cool"). The book is an intimate glimpse into the lives of immigrants from war torn Africa to our nation's capitol. The book contains beautiful descriptive passages about Washington and it's design/atmosphere. The protagonist is authentic and lonely. He is torn between two worlds; the one he was force to escape and the one where he found refuge.Sadly, though he doesn't feel comfortable in either world. Quick and easy read. Nicely written, but one of those books that makes you crazy because you want something "good" to happen to a passive, complacent protagonist.
