Oh dear, what a slog. I read this on my phone during lunch over the last year, so that might have something to do with it. A few brilliant flashes, but overwhelmed with meaningless diversions into Russian land policy, a set of characters that I don't care about (including Anna) and an ending that feels like he just ran out of paper and so he stopped. Sorry Leo, I won't be reading more of your stuff. Life is too short.

4.5 stars. I know, I can't just stay with the even numbers! I read this fairly shortly after reading The story of Edgar Sawtelle, and found a lot of similarities, but found this ending to be much more satisfying. The only reason I wouldn't give it 5 stars was I was distracted by the portrayal of Swede, the 9 year old sister. She was so bright, capable and precocious, it was not at all believable.

Little gems, these stories. The connecting thread is the devastating Kobe earthquake--but there's nothing really about the quake itself in these stories, just its imprint on the characters. Lots of people, passing through each other's lives. A secret delivery, strangers on a beach, a crazy frog. Ok, so I wasn't so keen on the frog story. But good stuff here.
