I stumbled upon the book Shoeless Joe by W.P. Kinsella several years ago in the bargain book section of a warehouse store. I had no idea what to expect as I was not even aware that the Kevin Costner movie, 'Field of Dreams' was based on this book. This book has so much more substance than the movie. As the movie tells the story of one man, one baseball field, and a dream, the book encompasses the man and his whole extended family in a magical story that somehow seems to transform magic to real life.An adult fairy tale. It was quite east for me to relate to the characters, their cares and concerns, their life choices. It opened up my mind to things I had never thought about before. I highly recommend this book.

Magnificent! I know THE BOOK THIEF is the one that all kiddies rave about, and don't get me wrong: that is a brilliant book and I love it. But then I discovered GETTING THE GIRL, which led me to find FIGHTING RUBEN WOLFE, which brings us here, to the first US publication of THE UNDERDOG, contained in this omnibus of all three Wolfe brothers books. If you don't, from the first chapter of THE UNDERDOG (or any of the other two, really), fall madly in love with the endearingly awkward and yet strangely beautiful Cameron Wolfe, then something is terribly wrong with you. Cameron's voice is so clear, so poetic, and so raw, that I could literally read about him all day, every day. Cameron feels like a friend, an intimate friend, like your brother even. The things that happen in these books are heartbreaking, yet not without humor, and not without (most importantly) hope. So many authors (particularly in YA) don't seem to understand that human beings need that ray of hope to carry on. The characters need it to feel real, and like their lives will continue beyond the pages of the book, and the reader needs it in order to feel good about the book after they close the covers. These books are proof that Zusak is a born writer. Each book here is separate, and yet each is a part of the same magnificent story. THE UNDERDOG, has a beautiful, clear naivete. FIGHTING RUBEN WOLFE is raw and powerful, and GETTING THE GIRL is like a burst of light. Read them separately, read them all at once, I don't care! JUST READ THEM! And if I ever start a band, our name is going to be Bloody Miffy.

Good but not great. I find Sheri Dew's writings can be very "hit and miss"

First half: somewhat faulty science whose flaws were mildly offensive to my sensibilities. Example: a study of nuns showed that 21% of those most cheerful died in the following nine years, compared to 55% of least cheerful nuns. Layard claims this "shows how happiness can increase a person's life." How naively speculative to assume causality between these two variables!! Perhaps the nuns were happy for the very reason that they were healthy. Or maybe an outside variable (having family members visit to care for them) caused both correlations. The whole thing was silly and but one example of the flaws of the first half. Still, vaguely interesting, although not nearly as well-written as Daniel Gilbert's "Stumbling Upon Happiness" on roughly the same topics. Second half: PAINFUL PREACHY PROPAGANDA on how to be happier. Layard discourages teachers treating religious ideas as "interesting topics for discussion" and advocates presenting them as "established truths." In his disucssion of cocaine, he snarkily refers to nicotine as "more gentle - it kills the body, not the soul." Had I not been reading this for a class, I would have thrown it across the room. UGH. In short: exactly what I feared might happen as I ventured into the self-help section to buy this last week.

Let me preface by saying I do not follow any one religious path. I'm a searcher, and I'm not sure if I'll ever settle on one faith. That said, The Screwtape Letters, an intense rumination on good and evil, as told through the letters of one demon to another, is a work I feel everyone should read, if to do nothing but understand the true nature of evil. I'll admit, I picked up the book because I thought a tale told by a demon would be kind of cool... sexy in a dark fun kind of way. The experience of reading it was anything but that. It was fully engrossing -- far better than mere fun. It did what the best books always do; it expanded my understanding of the world around me. It gave me something I've kept with me since. A valued, and somewhat terrible knowledge. My copy included a forward that explained that C.S. Lewis had to recover from writing it. After reading and processing his work, I know why.

***NOTE MY REVIEWS OFTEN CONTAIN SPOILERS*** When Nellie shows up at the island where Irina sacrificed her life to save Dan and Amy, they escape in Irina’s boat knowing the police are searching for the boat Nellie came in on. One the boat they find Irina’s backpack with identification for every member of the clue hunt, including themselves. It leads them to think about a song which Nellie identifies. They quickly find themselves on the way to Pretoria, South Africa where through hints from a stranger with a post card they find themselves following the history of Shaka, a Zulu warrior and trail of Winston Churchill, a Lucian leader. With family trying to kill them at every turn, will they find the clue and if they do will they make it out of South Africa alive? So when I wasn’t blogging I was handwriting my reviews and unfortunately after almost six month without posting I lost an entire notebook of reviews, this happened to be one of them. And as I’ve mentioned many, many times while blogging my memory sucks, it’s one of the reasons I write reviews in the first place because without the review to remind me about the book by the time the sequel comes out a year later I don’t remember the firs t book. This one I’d already rated on Goodreads as a three stars and while I’m not sure why I chose that rating I’m not changing it. Most likely it was because of discrepancies that I wouldn’t notice reading it this time since I didn’t reread the first six books since I had the notebook I wrote those reviews in. That’s my best guess for the rating on this one, since I can’t think of any other reason to rate it lower. Lerangis’s additions are my least favorite in the 39 Clues series, mostly because what history he gives, and he doesn’t give a ton, isn’t of interest to me. Like his first installment in the series we’re again dealing with the Tomas branch of the family searching for one of their clues. Due to this we find ourselves sifting through a lot of military style history, learning about a Zulu warrior that changed their style of fighting by moving from throwing spear to stabbing with short, large bladed spears. You know for that up close and personal, get yourself all bloody kill. While I’m sure all the little boys reading this will be eating up all that information, all it does for me is churn my stomach a little. There’s also a little information on Apartheid which I thought was probably the most educational addition to the book, though with the descriptions of prison conditions and student rebellions he still manages to add some blood to that history too. So the educational information was there, it’s just not stuff that most girls are going to be all that interested in and it’s presented in lumps, meaning you’ll get like a big section of learning and then go back to all character focus, rather than having it spread evenly throughout. For me that kind of made the educational sections drag because well it’s not like I’m all gung ho to learn about African warfare. The way the story was present however was quite interesting, the way the man shows up with the post card and everything like Grace had planned for them to have a little help along the way. And that only her direct descendents could see the letter which made me think that basically meant just Amy and Dan was fairly interesting too. The book is well written, and for the most part fast paced, in mostly a close third person will multiple character view points. There are multiple near death experiences and the book is definitely action packed from beginning to end as the competitors start taking the competitions to extremes. It’s not about slowing down the competition anymore, it’s about eliminating them. And the ending presents a shock readers won’t be expecting. Most of the character development relies upon the previous installments for readers to already know the characters, but we see some major changes in Amy in this book as her thoughts become darker so much that she doesn’t even recognize herself. We did get a decent amount of time in Dan’s point of view in this novel as well as he struggles to keep things happy in the face of so much danger and death. You get a little bit of other characters as well, Alistair’s fighting to overcome his old hang up when he’s faced with Bae Oh, and Ian’s wondering how far too far is when his mother plots to kill Amy and Dan. Even though you don’t get the opportunity to view things from Hamilton’s point of view you do see him starting to stand further apart from his family has he signals Dan and Amy of danger and helps them to save Alistair Oh. It’s really hard to discuss character development in a series because the characters are built through all the books and by the time you get to the seventh you pretty much know these characters and there’s less of a need to create the character and more of a need just to maintain what’s already been built. Overall it was a good installment in the 39 Clues series, which will probably appeal more to boys than girls just because the educational portions lean more towards fighting and violence than Mozart and Franklin like other installments have. One thing I can say for this series is that it’s important to start with the first novel because without the previous novels under your belt it will be hard to understand what’s really happening, having been so long since I’d read these books I had to stop and think when it first opened, finishing a scene from the previous novel what exactly had happened to get them where they are. So if you’re planning to embark on the Clue Hunt begin at the beginning and then enjoy the ride all the way through. It’s a journey you won’t regret.

"Chivalry" is my favorite short story in which Gaiman takes the search for the holy grail by bringing it into the life of an eldery British woman who loves to read romance novels. "Baywolf" is another good one (written in poetry format) that takes the idea of "Beowulf" and transforms it into a futuristic "Baywatch" tale.

I love historical fiction and this is one of the best that I've ever read. I loved the characters, their struggles, and the scenery of 14th century England. It was a beautifully written love story that chronicles the story of Katherine Swynford and the Duke of Lancaster. I just can't say enough good things about this story: it has love, murder, adultery, war, and betrayl. Very entertaining and historical all at the same time. I can't wait to read more of Anya Seton's other novels.

i read (or tried to read) this book based on the glowing recommendations of a number of friends. try as i might, i could not get past the first few chapters. i am an indiscriminate reader from way back - i will read the back of a shampoo bottle - yet it took a supreme triumph of will not to chuck this god awful book across the room.

On Lily Sanderson’s eighteenth birthday she’ll become just a girl—still a mergirl, true, but signing the renunciation will ink Princess Waterlily of Thalassinia out of existence. That leaves plain old Lily living on land, dating the boy she loves, and trying to master this being-human thing once and for all. Now that Lily and Quince are together, mer bond or not, she’s almost content to give up her place in the royal succession of Thalassinia. But just when she thinks she has everything figured out, the waves start to get rough. Lily’s father sends a certain whirlpool-stirring cousin to stay with her on land. What did Doe do to get herself exiled from Thalassinia and stuck in terraped form when everyone knows how much she hates humans? And why why why is she batting her eyelashes at Lily’s former crush, Brody? The seafoam on the raging surf comes when a merboy from Lily’s past shows up—Tellin asks Lily for something that clouds her view of the horizon. There’s a future with Quince on land, her loyalty to the kingdom in the sea, and Lily tossing on the waves in the middle. Will she find a way to reconcile her love, her duty, and her own dreams? Tera Lynn Childs’s sequel to Forgive My Fins offers another tail-flicking romance with plenty of fun, sun, and underwater adventure. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________ when lily turns 18, she will be just a girl..a mer-girl, all the same. she also has to start worrying about colleges to go to and other mumble jumble things that every girl has to deal with.at least she has her boyfriend quince that she loves very much. lilys grades arnt really high enough to get into a college unless she aces her SATs scores.later on a science teacher saw how good and interested in underwater science lily is and so she askes lily if lily wants to go to seaview communitys, because the teacher has a feeling that lily acturally might get in cause of her interest. lilys life just got worse when she opened the door to see Dosinia(doe) on her and aunts doorstep.turns out doe got exiled from the kingdom.which is bad because exile is the worse punishment for mer people, and her dad only used it one time on a person in a lifetime. doe got exiled by lilys dad because she has taken human hatred way too far.so as a punishment and a lesson he has sent doe to land and exiled her of her powers, and she is to stay with lily on land until lilys dad feels that doe learned her lesson and is to be returned. shannen is also helping lily out on learning things that lily needs to know for the tests. doe tells lily that lilys dad said that that doe has to stay on land until she starts to like humans, and that lily is the one that gets to decide when doe gets to go back to the kingdom. later on doe starts to flirt with brody one the first day of school, and of course, brody falls for does charms..things go from bad to worse when lily catches doe and brody making out in lilys home one day.oh no, they just kissed, which means that doe has linked a magical bond between them and they have to do the seperation b4 brody turns mer-man and starts to have more feelings for doe. later on lily finds out that the reason doe kissed brody was because doe knew that brody would have to be taken to the kingdom by lily, which leaves doe with quince....which is the part where doe plans to start to flirt and win him over by the time lily gets back to land. lilyi takes brody to the kingdom underwater to find out that her dad wasnt going to be back until morning.so brody got shown around by the guards and lily went to go see her bff peri.then later on lily sees a guy at the palace that she recognizes...and its tellin-her childhood friend-and hes all grown up since she last saw him. turns out tellin has been living on land too, but in puerto rico.along time ago lily and tellins dads were bffs, but then one day they started fighting and tellin and his fatherjust left lilys kingdom and went to their own, never to return, and now tellins back since his father is ill. later on when lily and brody finds out that doe hates humans , and then everyone finds out that the reason doe got exiled was because she stole lilys dads trident...and tried to wipe out the east coast with it. later on lily thinks it over and decides that the only way for doe to not hate humans and to learn to love them is for her to stay bonded to brody.lily saw the tears in does eyes when brody walked out on doe, so that means brody can change the way doe is. and she knows that brody has feelings for doe too since brody told lily that he feels like doe is his future everytime hes near her. later on lily sees tellin in her house, and turns out he wanted to talk to her...he thinks that telling the world about mermaids and all may result into something goodly.when tellin says that lily-the princess of the kingdom, and telling-prince of another kingdom can work together to get the people of the kingdom to say yes so that they could tell the world, lily has to disagree.because 1. she will not be queen anymore in a week or so.so tellin proposes to lily and says that lily can bond to him and she will stay princess.but lily doesnt want to risk quinces relationship with her, so she declines.but tellin says he wont give up, and later on lily finds out tellin came all the way to lilys home form pueto rico without planning about where to stay at after the talk, so she tells him he can stay at her house for a few days. lily convinces brody to give doe another chance. qince gets alittle jealous when he hears that tellin is staying at lilys place. later on shannen takes lily to go "grocery shopping" and right next door is lilys favortie restraunt.and they go in there and everyone says surprise!its lilys early surprise party.every present is great and all, until tellin says out loud in the end "to lily, who will give up anything and everything to be with the ones she loves, even her title".thats when quince found out that when lilys 18th birthday comes up, she is giving up her tittle if shes not bonded. lily wishes on her birthday wish that one day quince would be able to go to the kingdom again with her. quince is mad that lily didnt tell him about the tittle thing and that she didnt tell him when she was going to give up her tittle on her 18th birthday to be with him. quince tells lily that hes not worth it for her to give up her royal tittle for him, and he says that she should bond with tellin to become a princess and eventually a queen, and forget about him. later on when lily went to the ocean to do the seperation on doe and brody, doe said no, because she loves him and wants to be bonded to him forever.and brody also loves her too, and knows the consequences of turning into a mer-man, but anything is worth it to him it he has doe in the end. doe tells lily that doe got exiled on purpose, because doe went to tellin when she heard about lily giving up her tittle, and tellin agreed with doe that without lily the kingdom would be a disaster.so doe got exiled on purpose to go on earth and bond with a boy which will lead lily to tellin, where tellin will try to make lily and him bond together.later on lilys dad comes to land and tells lily something that excites her, her dad says that her dad found a way to make quince to be able to go to the kingdom with lily whenever he wants to.the only bad thing was that quince was away and mad at lily.later on in the end quince shows up to the ball and quince agrees for her to kiss tellin to save tellins kingdom and all so she does.lucina(tellins gf) also agrees for tellin to be bonded to lily so that the kingdom will be in peace.so tellin and lily bond and everything is good good happy happy.doe has changed, lily and quince are together and happier than ever, tellin and lucina are happy together also, and the kingdoms are all going to be safe in the future.life for lily is great.
