Vincent Kao vincentworks — ***NOTE MY REVIEWS OFTEN CONTAIN SPOILERS*** When Nellie shows up at the island where Irina sacrificed her life to save Dan and Amy, they escape in Irina’s boat knowing the police are searching for the boat Nellie came in on. One the boat they find Irina’s backpack with identification for every member of the clue hunt, including themselves. It leads them to think about a song which Nellie identifies. They quickly find themselves on the way to Pretoria, South Africa where through hints from a stranger with a post card they find themselves following the history of Shaka, a Zulu warrior and trail of Winston Churchill, a Lucian leader. With family trying to kill them at every turn, will they find the clue and if they do will they make it out of South Africa alive? So when I wasn’t blogging I was handwriting my reviews and unfortunately after almost six month without posting I lost an entire notebook of reviews, this happened to be one of them. And as I’ve mentioned many, many times while blogging my memory sucks, it’s one of the reasons I write reviews in the first place because without the review to remind me about the book by the time the sequel comes out a year later I don’t remember the firs t book. This one I’d already rated on Goodreads as a three stars and while I’m not sure why I chose that rating I’m not changing it. Most likely it was because of discrepancies that I wouldn’t notice reading it this time since I didn’t reread the first six books since I had the notebook I wrote those reviews in. That’s my best guess for the rating on this one, since I can’t think of any other reason to rate it lower. Lerangis’s additions are my least favorite in the 39 Clues series, mostly because what history he gives, and he doesn’t give a ton, isn’t of interest to me. Like his first installment in the series we’re again dealing with the Tomas branch of the family searching for one of their clues. Due to this we find ourselves sifting through a lot of military style history, learning about a Zulu warrior that changed their style of fighting by moving from throwing spear to stabbing with short, large bladed spears. You know for that up close and personal, get yourself all bloody kill. While I’m sure all the little boys reading this will be eating up all that information, all it does for me is churn my stomach a little. There’s also a little information on Apartheid which I thought was probably the most educational addition to the book, though with the descriptions of prison conditions and student rebellions he still manages to add some blood to that history too. So the educational information was there, it’s just not stuff that most girls are going to be all that interested in and it’s presented in lumps, meaning you’ll get like a big section of learning and then go back to all character focus, rather than having it spread evenly throughout. For me that kind of made the educational sections drag because well it’s not like I’m all gung ho to learn about African warfare. The way the story was present however was quite interesting, the way the man shows up with the post card and everything like Grace had planned for them to have a little help along the way. And that only her direct descendents could see the letter which made me think that basically meant just Amy and Dan was fairly interesting too. The book is well written, and for the most part fast paced, in mostly a close third person will multiple character view points. There are multiple near death experiences and the book is definitely action packed from beginning to end as the competitors start taking the competitions to extremes. It’s not about slowing down the competition anymore, it’s about eliminating them. And the ending presents a shock readers won’t be expecting. Most of the character development relies upon the previous installments for readers to already know the characters, but we see some major changes in Amy in this book as her thoughts become darker so much that she doesn’t even recognize herself. We did get a decent amount of time in Dan’s point of view in this novel as well as he struggles to keep things happy in the face of so much danger and death. You get a little bit of other characters as well, Alistair’s fighting to overcome his old hang up when he’s faced with Bae Oh, and Ian’s wondering how far too far is when his mother plots to kill Amy and Dan. Even though you don’t get the opportunity to view things from Hamilton’s point of view you do see him starting to stand further apart from his family has he signals Dan and Amy of danger and helps them to save Alistair Oh. It’s really hard to discuss character development in a series because the characters are built through all the books and by the time you get to the seventh you pretty much know these characters and there’s less of a need to create the character and more of a need just to maintain what’s already been built. Overall it was a good installment in the 39 Clues series, which will probably appeal more to boys than girls just because the educational portions lean more towards fighting and violence than Mozart and Franklin like other installments have. One thing I can say for this series is that it’s important to start with the first novel because without the previous novels under your belt it will be hard to understand what’s really happening, having been so long since I’d read these books I had to stop and think when it first opened, finishing a scene from the previous novel what exactly had happened to get them where they are. So if you’re planning to embark on the Clue Hunt begin at the beginning and then enjoy the ride all the way through. It’s a journey you won’t regret.

_onnelloyola
None William _onnelloyola — One of the best books I have read in a long while. Superb story, tells about the endurance of the human spirit in times of great tragedy and suffering, and how we can overcome our pain. This is a real winner from one of my favorite authors, Kristin Hannah.
