Couldn't do it. I knew I was in trouble as soon as I read the first page. The writing is weak and superficial and the story has a lot of vapid characters. The premise had potential but it ultimately just fell flat. In terms of retellings Song of the Sparrow by Lisa Ann Sandell is better by miles even though it's not a faithful retelling of Tristan and Isolde per se. This book was acquired for review from the publisher at BEA 2011

what a slow going book IMO.some interesting tidbits I didn't know about Elizabeth, but I found the book just went on and on about unimportant events but not the important ones.

powerful: a cliche, back-of-the-book word, but true. i've read a couple of the short stories by themselves before and i think they have more impact that way than reading them straight through altogether. feel sorry for the person who has to write the inside flap summaries for schickler's books--almost impossible and once you write it as a conventional plot just sounds completely preposterous.

A little Kite Runner, a little Life of Pi, a little British, a little preachy - just a little - but a really good read. I enjoyed the character of Little Bee, I found her story moving and the language in which she told it engaging. I found Cleave's writing very impressive; good detail, the kind of detail that adds to the character and the story. I would definitely recommend it to the ladies and men that like literary fiction.

I just finished this book over the lunch hour, so my review may not be the most clear-headed. Martel uses this narrative to explore what is beautiful about faith and life and what is exceedingly awful. I really got into the story, although some parts were tedious and other parts were written sloppily. Since I tend to suspend my disbelief quite willingly when I read these kinds of stories, I was surprised and upset by the ending. I have a feeling Deb probably figured out what Pi was doing much earlier. You should not read this book while eating (I made that mistake twice...yuck).
If you ever wondered how certain social movements got started and what their impact was on a global level then author, Clay Shirky, explains in his book how those movements were started with the help of a few new online social tools. The use of new social media tools allows individuals to be able to pull together other people of similar interest, not within days or months but, now in minutes or even hours. New social movements are able to create change at a faster rate then what used to take months to happen. Before Twitter, Facebook, Meetup, Myspace, etc, came about, if anyone wanted to get someone elected or get a company to change something about a product, they had to set up a lobbying business or organization and recruit people of similar tastes and concerns. The transaction costs involved were enormous because of printing flyers and using people's time but now you can set up a group online and within minutes you have a group of able willing individuals interested in doing the same thing, which companies or congressman can not ignore. These lower social costs and transaction costs have helped start social revolutions, forced companies to change their practices and products and even created change in religious organizations. The author explains that in order for these efforts to come about, you need three rules, and those rules are a Promise of what your service offers, the social tools your service provides and a bargin, in knowing that what you like about this service won't change without the groups approval. All these new social tools have brought a new form of behavior to soceity that has never been exposed before on a global level. This book goes into detail about how to use those social tools to your benefit, either good or bad, and to understand where the world is going with these changes.

Funny and sweet story about vampire tired of vampire life who wants to find the solitude and some meaning in his long life with a little help of his friends - unconventional pack of werewolves. Things don't work exactly as he planned as all hell descends on his new home: his friends, his friendly and sexy vet neighbor Tate, werewolf's sister, feral cats and, finally, his psychotic ex. This was entertaining, at moments farcical, take on supernatural beings. Werewolves who are getting help with flee control, sing show tunes with their vampire friend, vampire who feeds stray cats and finds pleasure in renovating his house... equals a lot of fun. If you want a serious paranormal story with the usual angst and horror - this isn't a book for you. Want some fun? Crying for the Moon fits the bill perfectly.
