It's hard to believe this was written when Jane Austen was only 14. I see it as a hilarious satire of popular books of the time. Although I have not read The Mysteries of Udolpho by Ann Radcliffe or anything by Maria Edgeworth, I did catch overtones of an earlier work called Pamela by Samuel Richardson, which I have read. This is a short read but well worth it if you don't take it seriously.

This book I can credit for the most influential on the way I perceive the world. It changed the way I see history, humankind and the "way the world works." Diamond's arguments make sense and seem to explain his thesis thoroughly. I still think about things I read in it to this day.

I enjoyed hearing this on audio - I'm now in love with listening to books when the reader's accent is the same as the story's narrator. Really surprised how much I liked this book.

Great standard Highlander romance. It's a formula, but I like that formula. Sweet girl with a secret falls for dashing laird and despairs that he doesn't love her (he does). She's outgoing and smart, but shy and troubled by a past of neglect and abuse. It was adorable. I'll read the rest of this trilogy, for sure. (4 stars)
