A really interesting and complex account of war-torn Lebanon from a female's perspective. Brings up many issues relating to gender and war--definitely one of my favorites.

This is similar to Brust other stories. I could see and predict it as I read along. And honestly the story did not interest me like his previous fantasy novels. Going to read Paradise Lost instead I think. Thanks for letting me borrow it though (you know who you are). =)

I love books whose endings make me sigh with contentment. And this book had a great ending. It's not about living happily ever after, but living realistically but still being able to live a full life. David doesn't like the changes that happen to his family after his beloved mother dies; his father remarries shortly afterward to his pregnant girlfriend and David's half-brother Georgie is born and takes up much of the attention. David loses himself further in fairy tales and books, which speak to him, but finds his nightmares and fits haunted by a Crooked Man. And one night, he travels through a crack in the garden wall into an entirely new world, where most fairy tales don't end quite so happily. The adventure in this story is great, and I love the fairy tale retellings that go on within it. They're much smarter, more Grimm-like in their sometimes disastrous endings. But at the same time, the book felt very plain to me, and not very exciting. It kind of reminded me of Alanna in that you kind of knew no bad things would befall David, despite the more adult and realistic themes of death and killing. But I still enjoyed the story.

I thoroughly enjoyed this translation of Sophocles Theban plays. Robert Fagles placed the plays in the order written, rather than in their dramatic chronology. At first I thought this was strange, but I followed his lead and read 'Antigone' first. Now, after reading Oedipus the King and Oedipus at Colonus, I have a much greater feeling for Antigone's suffering and a much better understanding of Creon's perspective as well. Now I'm ready to re-read Antigone better armed with the facts of their respective histories. Beyond that, what can I say about Sophocles? He treats these myths with genius skills, contemporary mastery of his times and a deep understanding of his fellow Athenians. An amazing accomplishment and an important work for any serious student of drama or literature to read deeply and repeatedly. The Thug perspective: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dMD18... *************** 2015 reread: Everything I said above and then some. The more Greek drama I read, the more I understand the sources and obsessions of western literature.

This is a very good parenting book...now if I could only remember any of the tips in the stress of the moment! In the introduction, the author sets out the focus of the book: My goal is to help parents become more aware of the way they talk, see the effects of their words and begin to respond in new ways to improve relationships with their children. By communicating in new ways, it is possible to promote cooperation instead of resentment, to express anger without hurting or insulting and to set limits on behavior while responding empathically to feelings. One main point I liked was that you can be permissive about their feelings but strict on their behavior. We can show empathy and acknowledge our child's feelings--they can know that we hear and understand them--without changing our standards of behavior. And the funniest line of the whole book: A sweater is something you wear when you Mother is cold. : ) Too true!
