S Montez stacyemont9220 — I love books whose endings make me sigh with contentment. And this book had a great ending. It's not about living happily ever after, but living realistically but still being able to live a full life. David doesn't like the changes that happen to his family after his beloved mother dies; his father remarries shortly afterward to his pregnant girlfriend and David's half-brother Georgie is born and takes up much of the attention. David loses himself further in fairy tales and books, which speak to him, but finds his nightmares and fits haunted by a Crooked Man. And one night, he travels through a crack in the garden wall into an entirely new world, where most fairy tales don't end quite so happily. The adventure in this story is great, and I love the fairy tale retellings that go on within it. They're much smarter, more Grimm-like in their sometimes disastrous endings. But at the same time, the book felt very plain to me, and not very exciting. It kind of reminded me of Alanna in that you kind of knew no bad things would befall David, despite the more adult and realistic themes of death and killing. But I still enjoyed the story.
