When I originally purchased Thirteen Days to Midnight, I had no idea what it was really about. It seemed like a promising story and lately I have been really into reading books with male protagonists, so when I picked this one up, I decided to give it a chance. And I am glad I did! Thirteen Days to Midnight by Patrick Carman is an YA psychological thriller with a hint of the supernatural. Sounds like a great combination right? It was fantastic! I loved how Carman kept you guessing throughout the whole book, giving you snippets of information without revealing anything big. Enough to keep you guessing, but not enough to let you guess correctly! I read the book in two sittings (and I would have read it in one if I was not distracted by school work!) and my how time flies while reading this book. I really liked the main character Jacob and his bestie, Milo. I was never super fond of Oh-- she seemed VERY full of herself to me and I felt like she was a bit possessive (though I guess I can understand why) so she was not to my taste. I also like a lot of the side characters and they all seemed so real to me (especially Ethan-- who DOESN'T know a jerk like him?). I definitely think Thirteen Days to Midnight was a great pick-up and hope to read more from Patrick Carman in the future!

I thought different things about this book over the course of my reading it. Natural enough, given the length. But, as Herodotus teaches us, don't judge a life happy or tragic -- or a book good or bad -- until you've seen it to the end. Dombey & Son is not as successful a novel as some of Dickens' finest: David Copperfield, Our Mutual Friend (currently, my absolute favorite), Nicholas Nickleby, Bleak House, etc. Judging it purely on structure and the usual things we read novels for, Dombey is a little bit dogmatic (preachy, really), a little bit full of loose strings and promised arcs that never quite come to fruition. But what comes to you, as you read its 700 or so pages, is that it is devoted, beautifully -- and you'll have to excuse me here -- to a True Thing. The books is a maybe not so much a story as a narrative that centers around a single theme of first importance to to any human heart -- the relationship between a parent and a child. This theme is explored in a dozen different variations, and central one thread, of Dombey himself, strikes a beautifully and truly resonant chord that hums, played chorus by so many resonant frequencies, across the the entirety of the work, right to the very end. It would be easy to imagine Dickens, with each installment, stubbornly bucking each of the storytelling conventions that he had planned to enact, as the beauty of this single sound rose out of his novel, startling even himself. Perhaps. In Dombey & Son, Dickens manages, I won't say without being sentimental (this is Dickens!), but with fully earned sentimentality, to weave a vital and beautiful book about something worth pondering, smiling at, and shedding a tear to. I don't know if I would recommend this book as the first tome of Dickens you should read, but it shouldn't be the last.

I tried to have it finished before the elections, but that didn't work out! I can't wait to find out what kind of president he is going to be. His writing reflects the calmness and knowledge of the world he projects on TV.

** spoiler alert ** I already guessed how Jessica would betray Elizabeth by simply reading the book jacket, but wow! I could never have imagined that the Sweet Valley twins would turn out the way they did. I remembered reading the books when i was younger, and what makes it even sweeter is that in Sweet Valley Confidential they are my age (27) so it was great to see what these 20-somethings were up to. Honestly, I didn't really find the style of writing to my liking. However, I guess since I was such a fan back when I was younger I was a bit more lenient in judging the book. The storyline was great though and I think many people can relate to it. That was actually a problem of mine in reading the book. I often find myself empathizing with the characters in books, movies, etc. and reading about the pain and anger Elizabeth went through somewhat reminded me of a somewhat similar time (minus the backstabbing of a female) in my life. Definitely needed a break from reading it every now and then!
Aphoristic, well-written, with occasional flashes of humor. Rasselas, an heir to the throne of Abyssinia, lives with other members of his family in the Happy Valley--once a year the gate is unlocked, and they are visited by the King. Rasselas, his sister, her maid, and his friend, the poet Imlac escape and go to Egypt to find how to live a happy life. This is not a novel but more of a morality tale, with long dialogues on philosophy, life and experience, including one on whether or not it is worthwhile to go and see the Pyramids. (Fortunately for this reader's interest, they decide to go.)

(Received through the LibraryThing Early Reviewer program) A brilliant and devious thriller - I can see why it won the Naoki Prize. The Devotion of Suspect X is amazingly, and intelligently, plotted, with every detail adding to the overall setup and resolution. The pace is subtle but moves quickly, and there are times toward the end when the situations are just heartbreaking. I might offend many people here if I add that it reminded me of Death Note, but it really did (minus the whole, you know, death note part) - if only because it's Japanese, told from the point of the view of the murderer(s), and the main story is really a fantastic battle of the wits between the murderer(s) and the people trying to solve the murder. If you're a character-driven reader, this may not be the book for you, because it's more about the setup and the mystery than the characters. Unless you're like me and found the genius physicist just a bit amazing. The English translation is fairly well done, but on the whole, I couldn't shake the feeling that I was reading a translation. I'm a little tempted to pick up the original versions of some of his earlier books. On an even less-related note, I found out that the drama Galileo is based on the other "Detective Galileo" books by Higashino Keigo *and* the genius physicist is played by Masaharu Fukuyama :o
