I can't tell if I really liked this book or I feel like I should have really liked the book - either way, I finished it with a great sense of relief and pleasure. Take from that what you will. It definitely wasn't what I expected (good? bad?) but I still found myself unable to give up on reading it. Too bad it took me over 2 months to get through...

A tough and tragic read, that I've yet to make my mind up about. The book details the last day of an alcoholic Brit living in Mexico. I've read it twice and it has puzzled and floored me each time. "The Consul stared back at the black words on the sign without moving. You like this garden? Why is it yours? We evict those who destroy! Simple words, simple and terrible words, words which one took to the very bottom of one's being . . ."

** spoiler alert ** First, I loved the illustrations. I was disappointed though because I expected to feel the magic I felt when I first read The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, but I didn't. Maybe I'm just not the right age anymore. There were certainly parallels - young girl on a quest to find "home" picking up assorted traveling companions along the way. At the same time, the book was over 400 pages, and you get to the end and feel like the story was only just beginning. The only question answered by the end of the 400 pages was that the planet they're on actually is Earth. Which I'd totally guessed from the beginning. Overall, it was OK, but it didn't really do much for me. So sad, because I wanted to love it. And it ends on a cliffhanger, but not enough of a cliffhanger to make me want to read the next book.
