I always related a bit to Carrie Bradshaw from the TV show Sex & The City, but I felt that sentiment even more while reading this book. Having been in high school in the 80s, it brought back memories I had long forgotten and I enjoyed reading how Carrie's story started.

I've read this one before, but it took me forever to get it read so I remember pretty much nothing. Excited to start reading it though.

A high-five for women-- that could be told in just a paragraph. If you need a pick-me-up, read the introduction only.
Eh, more historical than romance. Booooring with no passion. Skip to page 250 and beyond and you get a little, you don't need those first 200 pages for anything but a headache. MommyReview.com

** spoiler alert ** This is one of those books you cannot put down... My husband read it in two days last weekend and I did the same this weekend. I should read more books by Dave Eggars. I absolutely loved "What is the What," and this book was wonderful too. Eggers really makes you care about a subject and identify with people and their situations. I knew very little about Sudan before reading "What is the What," but after reading it I've been following the elections with a newfound interest. Back to Zeitoun... Zeitoun is the story of a prosperous New Orleans business man and his experiences during Hurricane Katrina. Abdulrahman Zeitoun sends his wife Kathy and four children out of the city when the storm bears down on them, but he stays to look after their home and the numerous other properties and work sites around the town. After the hurricane, he scours the city in a canoe, finding people and animals, and helping anyone he can find. He saves people from drowning, delivers water and supplies to his neighbors, and feeds stray dogs left in the flood. Abdulrahman is also Syrian and a Muslim and this may be the reason he is arrested for looting during one of his canoe excursions by the Department of Homeland Security. He is imprisoned without charges or the right to even make a phone call to his wife. He is detained in a makeshift outdoor prison where guards routinely pepper spray their victims, and then moved to a maximum security prison, where he finally after over three weeks makes the phone call to his wife. Thanks to his attorney, wife, and the numerous people of the city who know and respect him, he is freed and the charges are dropped. Basically this book draws attention to the insane debacle that was the government handling of Katrina under the Dept. of Homeland Security. Like all Eggers' books, a significant portion of the proceeds go to organizations that are working to help those in need. So... buy the book!

I had to read this book for summer reading, and because of that I began this book quite caustiously. However, I was pretty pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed the book. The writing style was pretty dry, but the author was a journalist at some point, and it was pretty similar to journalistic writing, plus it is non-fiction, so I couldn't hold that against the book but so much. Hiroshima tells an important story, but one thing that wasn't made clear in the book that should have been is that the Japanese government had been given an ultimatim: surrender or we'll drop an atomic bomb on your country. They did not surrender, so the bomb dropped on Hiroshima. My dad pointed out to me that since an atomic bomb had never been used before, they may have just asumed we were bluffing. We told them the bombs would keep coming until they surrendered (which was, in fact, a bluff, since we only had two) but they still refused until the second bomb dropped on Nagasaki. I assume the public had no clue, but the government did. Now, for the actual stories in Hiroshima. I felt espcially sorry for Miss Sasaki. Her engagement was called off for two reasons, both of which she could not help: she was a hibakusha (survivor of one of the A-bombs)and that she was a cripple from injuries suffered when the bomb went off. I found this ridiculous, but what can you expect from an arranged marriage? The man obviously didn't love her, and therefore had no reason to stay. But he didn't even visit her in the hospital. To me, that's dispicable. Both that he and his family abandoned her so readily for something she could not help, and that he didn't try to be very compassionate about it. Ugh. Disgusting. Sorry, rant over. To summarize: The book was pretty good, much better than I expected, though the writing style is lacking in that it's dry and pretty monotone. Other than that, it was a great book.
As much as I enjoyed 'Ravenous' it was just the appetizer for Bestial. What a great read. I so enjoy Garton's writing and his take on the supernatural. This book was less about the blood and gore and more about the story of what happens to Big Rock when it is invaded by werewolves. Loved the fact that some of the main characters from this book are the Private Investigators from 'Night Life' I am looking forward to more of their adventures in future books (at least that is where I hope that Garton is going with them.) Excellent read and highly recommended!

I heard a lot of praise and recommendations regarding this book before I bought it. After all, it is rated as one of the top 100 English novels in the last century. The only reason it took me so long to read it was that I was not able to find it in near-by bookstores for such a long time. So, you could imagine the expectations I had! Well let me tell you, I was quite disappointed. That reaction is not due to faults in the book itself, but I was expecting something a little more... I don't know, eloquent? The narrative style was quite crude. The first few pages were a bit confusing because of the characters' speech and grammar. As a reader, you soon get used to that though, so it’s not much of a drawback *. The story itself was a bit on the disturbing side; 15 year old Alex leads a gang to nightly violent mayhem and crimes. He feels no remorse while committing crimes such as assault, theft, rape and even murder. On the contrary, he rather intensely enjoys it! When his gang members betray him to the police, Alex is sent to a prison. There, he undergoes an experimental therapy technique which causes him to relate any form of violence with a feeling of sudden nauseating pain. After a while, the authorities deem him safe to be released into society once more. Once out, he finds that his gang members have turned on him and the only people who are willing to help him are those whom he has hurt in the past. Since he no longer feels the same about violence, he begins to lead a different life… That’s the main plot of the book. However, the story is about choice, or how one can be stripped of choice. It spurs a lot of controversial ideas on how the “authorities” can strip the choice of people whom are found unfit to make choices of their own. * Actually, I’m quite impressed about how the author managed to make up a form of language all together! P.S. I also tried to watch the movie, but I got bored 20 minutes in… Maybe it was the timing, but I would have much rather read something else!
