Paulo Coelho writes himself into the book as a character. The book is about when his wife decides to go on a spiritual journey without him. She leaves him in the middle of the week with no forwarding address. Coelho writes himself into the story as the narrator. I didn't like his character very much and I don't blame his wife for leaving him. I loved the character of his wife. She doesn't spend her time following the shadow of her famous husband--instead she forges her own path.

** spoiler alert ** The story was really good. However, there were some discrepancies. It felt like the author changed her mind as the story evolved. Like at first she decided to make Riley the father of Beth's child and then changed it to Jeff. At the beginning Beth also told that it wasn't rape. It looks like she changed her mind and decided not to make Riley's parents as evil. There is no such thing as pure black/white in real life. Jeff cannot be so bad. There is some good in every person. I also did not like the fact that the murder is covered and even if Jeff was a criminal himself, his murderer should be punished. It was like watching a movie where the lead character kills dozens of people to save a damsel in stress, and the audience is expected to cheer for him. What about all the dead? Don't they have a family, a lover may be? If the story was a little bit longer, there might be some space to develop the relationship between Riley and Jack. I like the stage they argue a lot before starting a relationship. Like the jealousy and misunderstandings. Anyway, despite the discrepancies, it was a really good story. I regret postponing reading it, since I thought it was some poker book looking at the title. I recommend you to read it. It has love, family values and hot cowboys. What more can a soul ask for? :)

Good series by Riordan, the later books are better and more purposeful, but still an entertaining read

I felt that I had to reas this, as it is a classic, partly a nobel preice winner and a book so many already have enjoyed. However I do not find it all that exciting, it certainly is not one of those books I can not put down. It has been lying in my room, in the same position, for several days now. Still, it is somewhat exciting and interesting, also I feel that I learn quite a bit about how it was to live in her time. I do not know, though, if I will actually read the next two. It feels like a waste to read a book I do not have to read, when I do not even love it. later edit At the end it just became only better and better, I am even considering reading the next one.

Her short stories can be great, but this novel is too preachy (as can be the down fall of some "ethnic" literature). Also, distastefully empowers women to the point of degrading men. Some good things are going on here, but a strong chapter here and there doesn't redeem a mediocre reading experience overall.

I did not like this book because of all the false doctrine it feeds to the unsuspecting reader. I'm disturbed by the hype; people love this book en masse, and that worries me. They say things like, 'now I understand God'. But if that's true, what god do they understand? It's sure not the God of the Holy Bible!! I would not recommend this book unless you are reading it for critical analysis for discussion purposes.

this is going to be my favorite book of the year: "I became a student of my own depressed experience, trying to unthread its causes. What was the root of all this despair? Was it psychological? (mom and dad's fault?) Was it just temporal, a "bad time" in my life? (when the divorce ends, will the depression end with it?) was it genetic? (melancholy, called by many names, has run through my family for generations, along with its sad bride, alcoholism) was it cultural? (is this just the fallout of a postfeminist american career girl trying to find balance in an increasingly stressful and alienating urban world?) was is astrological? (am i so sad because I'm a thin-skinned cancer whose major signs are all ruled by unstable gemini?) was it artistic? (don't creative people always suffer from depression because we're so supersensative and special?) was it evolutionary? (do i carry in me the residual panic that comes after millenia of my species' attempting to survive a brutal world?) was it karmic? (are all the spasms of grief just the consequences of bad behavior in previous lifetimes, the last obstacles before liberation?) was it hormonal? dietary? philosophical? seasonal? environmental? was i tapping into a universal yearning for god? did i have a chemical imbalance? or did i just need to get laid?" pg. 49

This should be required reading in every school.
First Line: I’ve been locked up for 264 days. Favorite Quotes: “I’ve been screaming for years and no one has ever heard me.” “I think if I freeze myself I can freeze the pain.” “If time stands still nothing can go wrong.” “Butterflies catch fire in my stomach.” My thoughts: This is one of the most quotable books ever. I mean, the writing in this book is just fantastic. Tahereh Mafi writes so beautifully. She says things in a way that I’ve never thought about. My list of favorite quotes could go on and on. I was drawn into this story from the very first page. The first sentence had me hooked. I wanted to know why the main character Juliette had been locked up for 264 days and why hadn’t she touched another human being in so long! I really liked being able to be a part of Juliette’s inner thoughts and reading all of the strike out thoughts. I thought it was interesting. I really liked all of the characters in the book. I think they were well written and multi-dimensional. I was never bored with the story and I think it contained a great mix of action, some romance, drama, and even had suspenseful parts. This book kept me interested throughout the whole story. I thought the ending was definitely unexpected. It’s like it took a left turn after going right the whole book. I’d say the last few pages were good but maybe a little disappointing... but not really. Either way, I’m definitely looking forward to seeing where this story goes in the future! Overall: Wonderful writing, great action, Do Not Miss This!
