I love Jennifer Crusie, and I'd read another novel by these two and enjoyed it, also. This one, however, suffers from editorial amnesia--or continuity--or whatever. The plot is interesting, but when there are mistakes such as having the male love interest enter by helicopter (using several pages of description about his descent and exit) and then leave by going to his Jeep (um, WHAT Jeep? How did he get the keys? Who provided the Jeep?)followed by other such mistakes (they had a "first touch" twice in two chapters), it became obvious to me that neither the authors nor the editor paid much attention. Boo.

"I sank down into the darkness and lived among the demons for a long, long time. I became one of them. But I was not saved by an innocent girl or an angel crying in heaven. I was saved by another demon, who looked on me with pity and so became human again. And because I pitied her in turn, I was allowed to become human, too."

Riley Rose (I love that name, BTW) isn't a bad girl, but, she happens to find release from her pain through sex, drugs, eating and alienating herself from anyone and everyone. Her mother died 2 years ago (it was quick and painful- cancer) and now she's lost her dad as well. No, he hasn't died, but he's reinvented himself as a devout Christian and married a woman who's basically changed his life. Now Riley feels completely lost and clings to her one friend, Chloe. Dad and new stepmom think she needs a change and a new life direction, so they send her to Spirit Ranch Christian camp for a week. She goes intending to hate it, and that assessment doesn't really change. But, she does begin to see some of the campers in a new light and maybe herself as well. Just a note on the cover. I agree with another reviewer, I hope that isn't supposed to be Riley. Throughout the novel, Riley is teased for her weight, its a big part of who she is. This girl isn't the least bit overweight. I know covers often don't reflect the true characters, but still...

I love this series (though I prefer the spelling Necropolis that the original novella used). The stories are entertaining and the world is very unique and interesting. The easter eggs were a pleasant surprise. I'm not often a fan of books that repeat basic information given about the characters in previous books so frequently, but I tend to look the other way for this series because I enjoy it so much. It's something fairly unique in a world saturated with vampires, werewolves, zombies, and other creatures that go bump in the night. My only real problem with this book was the poor editing. It's riddled with typos, especially the extra little case in the back of the book. Even the bit on the back of the cover is wrong. Mild spoiler. (view spoiler)

This is an excellent account of what to me was a little known part of the Falklands war. I knew, like a lot of people, that a Vulcan had dropped bombs on an airstrip but that was all. This account rectified that. You are taken from the very beginning of the initial proposal right up until the return of the aircraft that took part in the mission. The participants describe all the problems (some near fatal to the mission) and how herculean the mission actually was. All throughout the account everything is put in perspective with the other goings on in the UK and the war at large. This is a fantastic account and really fills a hole in my knowledge of this important part of British military history. Well worth a read.

This book represents to me an opportunity to see the cultural train wreck of america through the eyes of the "other American". Du Bois' eloquence and and grasp of the higher road when communicating his grievances cast a long shadow over what George Bush, the Lesser, used to call Democracy in America. The book is a wake up call for all ages.

I liked the metaphors, religious and zoological elements, as well as journey that Pi goes on. It is quite gripping. I found the beginning particularly slow and the end anti-climactic, consdering especially how much talk I'd heard about 'the ending' (as if it deserved a 'the'). In fact the ending was not nearly as multi-dimensional and intriguing to me as it seems to have been to others, which made me wonder if I skipped passages (entirely possible...I was bored). Nevertheless, its an uplifting and unique journey, which if you can suspend your own sense of realism, can be partially shared with Pi.
Absolutely stunning - couldn't put this one down. Couldn't wait to see the film after reading and despite some slight changes for the screenplay - wasn't disappointed. Highly recommended.
