A little kitten was dropped into the book return slot during a freezing Iowa night, and was found by the library director the next morning. This was Dewey who lived at the Spencer Public Library for the next nineteen years. Dewey was a calm, sociable cat who worked his way into the hearts of the townspeople and the librarians. I was surprised that there didn't seem to be a problem of allergies to cats in a public building, but wondered if the author glossed over that because she loved the cat so much. Some parts seemed like they could have been edited down a bit too. Overall, this was a charming book about Dewey, the author's life, and the state of Iowa.

I used to like the 'idea' of Sedaris, a witty, self deprecating gay guy trying to get through life. How charming. When I read his books, however, I find him to be an utterly repulsive person. He doesn't induce laughing as much as wincing at his terrible behavior and poor judgement. An utter waste of time that could only be enjoyed by somebody festering below the lowest common denominator, like he is. Seriously, why do people like this guy?

I won this book in the First Reads program. I really enjoyed this one. It is a sweeping saga of the Kelly family who survives the potato famine in Ireland and makes a new life in Chicago. It is a bleak story at times but one of survival and human triumph as well. I found all the characters to be realistic and I really cared about them, particularly Honora, Michael, and Maire. The horrors of the potato famine and the absolutely inhumane treatment of the Irish by their English landlords were well told, although the author does tug at the heartstrings a bit too much. The book is also full of Irish legends and stories that add a touch of magic and enchantment to the story. I did find the first part of the story that takes place in Ireland to be more engaging than the second half in Chicago, but it was a good read all the way through.

One of the volumes of Arthur Conan Doyle's diary is missing, and questions about why he "killed" Sherlock Holmes and later brought him back to life would have been answered by the missing book along with information about Doyle's last few months. Based on a true account of a member of the Sherlockian Society, this is a good read for those who enjoy the original Sherlock Holmes stories.

A childhood favorite, still fun to read today.
I enjoyed this book - one of the better Oprah-list books. I felt sorry for Julie. Somewhat depressing as are all of Oprah's picks.

Great read...horrifying real-life story of kids growing up in a household where dysfunction was the norm.
