It is such a great pleasure to have read this book, to have known the character - a mere little girl - who, given her circumstances, would have been a spoiled brat. Being a rich little thing, however, doesn't mean that you have the right to be mean to other people, and that's just the right attitude Sara Crew has. Being pampered too much also does not alter her kindness and thoughtfulness of others. I wish there are more fictional characters like Sara, for others to look up to. Although up to a certain extent all the qualities seem to be too good to be true, and almost impossible to be adapted by young children, would it harm anyone to have such a perfect model? I love The Secret Garden, but I love A Little Princess a little bit more!

This truly is a remarkable story. A baby elephant whose mother was slaughtered by poachers for ivory,shipped to America for sale as who knows what, bought out of pitty by a rancher that had been THE Marlboro Man, saved from dying, and was raised to be a friendly companion to Bob, the owner of the T Cross ranch just south of Colorado Springs gives the basis of this fascinating book. A must read to find the ending!

Surreal is a good word to describe this story of a girl who on her eighth birthday wishes for an elephant to come and take her away from her life. When she gets her wish and doesn't come back her parents miss her and dream of her walking with the elephants, until an old woman, Miss Adelle, finds her and convinces her to go home. The story is poetic and lovely in a rather bizarre way. I love the illustrations by Ana Juan.

Impressive debut. There's a lot going on in this short-ish book (220 pp), sometimes at the expense of character development. Some events on the timeline seemed a bit rushed or glossed over as well. Sorry to start with the negative. There's a lot to like here.I wouldn't have minded a longer book is all. I think teens will like it and that's what counts. It's quick. It's intense. Marisa is likable and relatable. I loved that she was a math geek. I loved the cross-cultural, cross-class glimpse into the world of a high-achieving high school senior.
