Very interesting and educational, I am more convinced than ever that this what I want to do.

read very closely or you'll miss what's going on. VERY CLOSELY. this can be aggravating. but pretty much worth it, for all the work.

Was my least fave of the three, but I definitely wanted to know about his relationship w/ his mom as an adult, so it was still an interesting read (although the stuff about his marriage I found less interesting...).

I thought the book dragged a little bit in places, and I found myself wishing the author would get to the point. Nevertheless, there were some surprisingly witty parts that made me laugh out loud -- a fun summertime read.

The second India book. I liked it less, mostly because Tossa was mentioned once, 3/4 of the way through the book, and so I spent most of it worrying that Something Had Happened. Also, as with all the Felse books not set in Shrewsbury, I missed Peters' exquisite descriptions of that area. [Feb. 2011]

To begin with, a poorly-devised haiku review: Not so innocent That rock can't corrupt a soul No day like today ________________ Days Like This is hard to put into words, but abrupt might be an adequate descriptor. I hadn't read the slim volume in several years and as we were packing up the house for a move I pulled it out of a box to read that night. What I had remembered was that it was an enjoyable story with enjoyable art but that the tale ended way too soon. And that's probably about how I'd describe it today. I almost always enjoy J. Torres' books and Scott Chantler always shows himself an able talent behind the art. The problem is that just as the story is getting going, it is over. I wasn't sure if this was meant to be a continuing series that was just cut short or if it was planned this way, but I felt, well, unsatisfied. Torres sets up lots of problems and lots of characters and everyone gets their cathartic implied finale over the space of about two pages at the end. There are a fistful of loose threads and I could see the author doing this intentionally, but I could also see him hoping that it would go further but maybe funds ran dry or the publisher said, "Joe, that's enough." It wouldn't be the first for him, I'm guessing—as the phenomenal Sidekicks similarly ends with the story left unfinished and no further volumes planned (so far as I'm aware). In case I wasn't clear, I loved the Days Like This that was there (the characters, the story, the art) but mourn the Days Like This that I will apparently never see.

This was my first time reading a Bill Bryson book. My grandma gave it to me for Christmas for some reason. I was surprised how much I enjoyed it. He has an enjoyable sense of humor most of the time, and seems to know his history, or at least is a good researcher. Throughout the story (which is also helped substantially by a cast of colorfully wrought characters) Bill interjects relevant bits of historical information, stuff that I found interesting even outside its context in this book, which I guess is the idea.

I feel like Levine peaked with her first novel, Ella Enchanted. I was tempted into reading this one because the setting, inspiration, and writing style were new and exciting, but that was misleading. It was still only a mediocre read. Her characters and their experiences were flat.

If your heart quivers for subjects like disguise, hand and finger kissing, men that wear wigs and make-up, dashing heroes that always get their man, and words like my dear, my infant and I worship the ground you walk on, you'll like this book. In fact you'll like any Heyer book as she's mastered the pistol, sword play, kidnapping, and the art of female rescue to such a fine point in her pen that my heart melts with each passing word. See, now I too am lost in the language. Sigh, it's a hopeless case.
