Gimmicky, fundamentally trivial stories, obviously churned out with some care by the great Gatsby author who must have been in demand by the weeklies that, in his time, published stories with great regularity. All of the characters are mildly interesting, mainly because they present his the context of how class works, which is his life's theme and a great contribution to American literature. If approached thusly, meaning, sociologically, one might survive til the end.

Various Positions does an amazing job at creating a young girls perspective on life as she endures many obstacles which are average for a young girl to face; parental disputes, upset and divorce; changing of schools; peer pressure; discovering oneself; pressure placed from educators to excel. This book struck me on a personal level as I spent many years dancing, and I also attended an arts school where the pressures mounted to be the best, to excel, to work your ass off for your art. Additionally, the peer pressure & creation of a school-yard caste system has affected me and my choices as I dealt with family upset as well. The writing was poignant and I really enjoyed reading this book. I would definitely recommend this book to others. I hope that this is not the last I see of Schabas' writing

When Tiki unknowingly steals Queen Victoria's ring a truce withy the fairies is put at risk. Tiki must choose between what is right and what is easy when the fairies attack and her adopted sister, Clara, is put in danger. The Faerie Ring is quite simply amazing, the descriptions allow you to sink into the story and experience each moment s if you were Tiki. You can feel her love for her family, her fears as her life and those of many others are put in danger. Magic lies within every page. One of the parts that stood out for me the most was an emotional scene where the fairies launch an attack and then it all ends so quickly!!!!!! Weaving well-known fairy-tales into the narrative, The Faerie Ring is a truly enchanting story. Recommended for fans of fantasy and adventure.

i initially chose 2 stars, then thought about my initial review to jhumpa lahiri's "the namesake" and decided i didn't want to make the mistake again of comparing the second work by an author to the debut. the first half showcases senna's strengths-- creating complicated characters who explore and explode race and racism. the second half wanders off and loses focus. but, even so, it's pretty good. i have to finish books i start reading, but if you are a person that doesn't have that compulsion, consider stopping half-way through. you will probably have a much higher opinion of "symptomatic" then.

Having had a daughter who spent over two weeks in a coma, this was a hard book for me to read. However, I could not put it down. I cried through it in two settings. I highly recommend this but warn you that you will need lots of tissues!

Don't do it. Just don't. The problem is, the book needed a brutal and dedicated editor. Everything would have been okay if it was 200 pages shorter. At it's length it simply looses the momentum to bring the reader to the (inevitable) conclusion. The history of England is interesting though.
