I really enjoyed this book ... I had no idea what to expect based on the title, but it was really enjoyable. The relationship between Ruth and her father is fascinating. This is the second book by John Irving I've read -- I will definitely read more!

I thaught that this book was boring because there were many things that i didnt understand many things in the book. It was mostly about war and finding a new family in a group. I am interested in books that are exiting, scary, mysterious, and has lots of actions. This book would be good for highschool kids because they would be in a higher level and would have more experience in boring or historical books.

About 25% into the novel, I was about ready to put the book aside. I then read the Goodreads overview ("Hugo Award for Best Novel (1992), Locus Award for Best Science Fiction Novel (1992)) and decided to keep moving ahead. The remaining 75% was an improvement; however, the narrative seemed at many points to be page after page of dead air. I'm still looking forward to reading the entire Vorkosigan Saga

I haven't quite decided how I feel about this book. I had a difficult time finding any sort of concrete thought in the first half of the novel, but I was able to begin to slowly find my way through the second half. I felt as though I was going somewhere with the Compson family, however, all of a sudden the book ends and I found myself traversing the whole family history (150 years of it) just to discover what had actually happened to the characters. Perhaps it is because I am still mentally chewing on this novel, but I believe that it is going to take a couple attempts before I actually come to a decision.

A very dark, brooding book concerning the Irish Catholic society of the 1950's in both Dublin and Boston. The mysterious death of a young woman leads a Dublin pathologist to investigate her connection with other members of his family. The writing is good, the narrative moves right along and is suspenseful, but ultimately this is not a book with any happy endings.
