Overall, this trilogy is great. The first book remains the best and I found them gradually decreasing in my favour, but this final book is still a good way to finish everything off. I don't know if it's because I read the second and third parts back to back, but I did find this one exhausting. Nothing ever goes right, people are always getting hurt, and at one point, even Katniss admits no one should be able to survive what she's going through. She's constantly breaking down and having to rebuild herself, just in time for something to break her down again. It is pretty gruelling and draining to read. I was confident of the ending as soon as I started reading, it seemed quite obvious which way she would go, but I did not predict her greatest loss. It left me feeling that actually, considering why Katniss went into the games in the first place, it was all a bit of a waste of time. However, I'm happy I read it, I would recommend it, and I still can't wait to see the film.

My Review: Whew! This was a tough book, but absolutely fantastic. Serious issues for Nicki & Joe in this one which made it so hard to read. Heartbreak. Frustration. Disillusionment. Both Nicki & Joe run the whole gamut of emotions in this book, as Joe is the one dealing with temptation and for the first time in the series, questioning Nicki and what she's telling him as truth. Poor Joe has had to deal with some crazy things in this series so far, but his faith to Nicki has been unwavering. Not so in this book. There is a woman after Joe in this book that has a score to settle with Nicki. Nicki knows that she's not human, but Joe doesn't believe her and every time they are together, they wind up fighting about her. To complicate matters, Sammy shows up again and this time Nicki is hurt and disillusioned. She doesn't have as much strenght to resist his allure especially when it seems as if he is actually trying to help her. I really liked that the final book in this series really went back to focus on the relationship between Nicki & Joe. Even though they are having issues, I love these two together. Joe is just such an all-around great guy. He's grown to be such a fun character over the course of the series. He settles Nicki and anchors her when life gets crazy...which it does...a LOT! Overall, I have loved this series. It's been fun and quirky and a fabulous read for something different. I still adore Sammy and loved that in the end, he truly earned that adoration. I hope that someday Terri Garey will be able to write his HEA, but he is the Devil, so hmmm....

Started off extremely slow, and the amnesia concept is getting way overused. No one ever explains why its necessary to have the characters lose their memories. Just send ambassadors and be open about it. The characters also state very clearly that Gaea is controlling death, so she decides who lives and dies. Therefore, heroes stay dead and monsters do not. However, in the first mock battle a Roman hero dies and mysteriously comes back; Gwen. Yet no one suspected her of being on Gaea's side, and nothing further came of this event. No accusations are even made concerning who killed her. Eventually (after 3/5 of the book has passed) the quest begins. It becomes interesting for a time then feels insanely rushed at the end. I believe barely two small chapters are dedicated to the final battle. Also, how does an elephant stop a giant made out of precious stones and gold? There was a decent lead-up of Frank hopefully becoming a Dragon and yet that never happened. In closing, there was no conclusion to the book. No epilogue or feeling of completion. Nothing was explained about the harpy, and Octavian is all but forgotten as an anti-hero.

This seems like a short story gone too long. Or King bet someone that he could write a book about anything and this was the outcome. Don't know if I'll finish it...depends if something shiny catches my eye.

Economic issues in plain English, and well written. I found this book easy to read, very interesting, and informative about issues of (economic) market design. McMillan is a pragmatic economist who leans neither left nor right in his economic theory, instead describing economic issues from observing what has/does work and what hasn't/doesn't. McMillan describes many examples of markets: how they evolved, how they succeeded or failed, etc. Definitely worth checking out.

If you like "Sex and the City" and enjoy chick-lit, "Girls' Poker Night" is a book that you probably will enjoy. This debut novel by Jill A. Davis is a quick, easy read that is sharp and witty. The author has experience with comedy having worked as a writer on the David Letterman show. The novel is comprised of many mini-chapters...often less than a page long each. This makes the book very easy to read in spare moments. Ruby Capote is a young woman who writes a `single woman on the edge column.' She begins to feel trapped by her life in Boston and her boyfriend, Doug. Ruby expresses her feelings as "Imagine settling for a life you can have because you don't have the courage to go after the life that you really want." She escapes by moving to New York City where she has gotten a job writing a column or the New York News. These she establishes a weekly poker night where five of her girlfriends come over and they discuss their lives over a game of cards. Ruby is neurotic and has a huge fear of commitment, which leads to several different situations that occur in this novel. Overall, an enjoyable book that ends a bit too soon. While, there is nothing terribly original about this book, it did make me laugh. It's a good book to read if you are looking for a break from more serious reads.

This book reminds me of William Faulkner's As I Lay Dying and Ken Kesey's Sometimes a Great Notion. Both books I hold dear but am not sure where We Have Always Lived in the Castle will rest. Merricat and Constance Blackwood, the two main characters, live with their invalid uncle in the wake of their dead family. The novel follows Merricat and Constance through their daily rituals, revealing in spurts how their life alone came together. Rather than uncovering a truth, the revealation only marks the beginning of a new life. With no head of house, and only brief encounters with outsiders, no one dominates the house, just as no one dominates the book; many haunt it. Not sure why, but I didn't get into this book as I thought I should. We Have Always Lived in the Castle may have been more stunning if I hadn't known the story before going in, or very confusing. You tell me which because I'm not going to tell you the plot. (Save Jonathan Lethem's introduction for afterwards, too. It occurs to me that novels deserve afterwords, essays and research books deserve introductions.) I wonder whether We Have Always Lived in the Castle, in contrast to As I Lay Dying and Sometimes a Great Notion, fails to ever get out of the Blackwood estate. Frightening; maybe the Blackwoods are best forgotten.
