He makes the point that we should try to live our ideals and it's a valid one. He goes to great pains to say Crunchy Conservatism Is Not A Movement, but you can tell he really would like it to be one.

Jenny Berg jenny8a1a — This book reminds me of William Faulkner's As I Lay Dying and Ken Kesey's Sometimes a Great Notion. Both books I hold dear but am not sure where We Have Always Lived in the Castle will rest. Merricat and Constance Blackwood, the two main characters, live with their invalid uncle in the wake of their dead family. The novel follows Merricat and Constance through their daily rituals, revealing in spurts how their life alone came together. Rather than uncovering a truth, the revealation only marks the beginning of a new life. With no head of house, and only brief encounters with outsiders, no one dominates the house, just as no one dominates the book; many haunt it. Not sure why, but I didn't get into this book as I thought I should. We Have Always Lived in the Castle may have been more stunning if I hadn't known the story before going in, or very confusing. You tell me which because I'm not going to tell you the plot. (Save Jonathan Lethem's introduction for afterwards, too. It occurs to me that novels deserve afterwords, essays and research books deserve introductions.) I wonder whether We Have Always Lived in the Castle, in contrast to As I Lay Dying and Sometimes a Great Notion, fails to ever get out of the Blackwood estate. Frightening; maybe the Blackwoods are best forgotten.
