When you read a novel like Frankenstein, it is hard to put aside all the things you remember from movies and other books. Even though you can’t help but have certain expectations , I really tried to start this book with a clean slate. About halfway through, I realised that everything I thought I knew about Frankenstein’s monster was absolutely wrong. No matter how many adaptations I saw or read, nothing was like the original. Frankenstein starts of as an epistolary novel, which is a genre I’m not that big a fan of. Like in almost every epistolary, the characters are quite one-dimensional and aren’t described physically. Luckily for me, the book turns into a “classic” novel after a few pages. Not that the characters receive a better depth, but the story does become easier to follow. I’m really glad Shelley decided to turn the book around because I don’t think that the story would be as captivating if it were a true epistolary. The book was published in 1818, and throughout the whole book I had problems with the old fashioned style of writing. Even though I sometimes had to reread a sentence twice to understand it, it didn't really bother me. It was just a part of the book, the writing fitted perfectely. Frankenstein gripped my attention from the very first page, and it didn't let it go. Even if you think you know the story, you should read it. Like me, you may be proven wrong and be introduced to a book that's almost 200 years old, but still is scary as hell.

This looked like it would be a good book - and I like them thick, usually. I never finished it, and that is something I seldom do. The footnotes actually drove me crazy! Enough, enough. I still have it on my shelf. Really, though...I'm never going back to it.

I really enjoyed this book, it's aimed at older teens so it's a really easy one. I really enjoyed it, read it in 2 days - couldn't put it down, can't wait for the next one. Great to have another lds author doing well with a clean, book club friendly read. N.b. After reading the other reviews of this, comparing it to 'the giver' which I have also read - I have to disagree with those who suggested it was a stolen idea...the whole concept is totally different, matched is a love story - the giver is more of a quest for life

I enjoyed the story a great deal. I liked the mirroring to Shakespeare. I liked the way the faeries existed in our world. I really enjoyed the Wild Hunt stuff. At times the main character felt very flat and sue-ish and she didn't make me empathize with her a great deal. The world and the story was interesting enough to keep me reading. I've started the sequel so we'll see how I feel about her mid-way through this.
