I learned that the Oedipus complex was central to Freud's psychoanalytical approach; and that as a person he was self-aware and restrained in a way Jung was far from being; that Freud and Jung saw themselves in a theoretical father-son relationship. Which is all very basic and not at the level of insight I'd expected here. Some simple case histories were rehearsed and a little of the more ludicrous sexual approaches to neurosis was touched on. Really, this was more a thriller than anything, with the plot built around an imagined murder. I felt the characters were interesting enough, but the details of early 20th century New York were what kept me reading. I am particularly impressed by bridges, and was riveted by details of the building of theManhatten Bridge, nearing completion in summer 1909: ..These bridges - the Brooklyn, the Williamsburg, the Manhattan - were, when constructed, the longest single spans in existenced... Together with the invention of spun-stell cable, one particualr technological innovation made them possible: the ingenious conceit of the pneumatic cassion. The problem to which the caisson responded was this. The massive support towers for these bridges, necessary to hold up their suspension cables, had to rest on foundations built underwater, almost a hundred feet beneath the surface. These foundations could not be laid directly on the soft riverbed. Instead, layer upon layer of sand, silt, shale, clay and boulder had to be dredged, broken, and sometimes dynamited until one reached bedrock. To perform such excavation undersater was universally regarded as impossible - until the idea of the pneumatic casson was hit upon. The caisson was basically an enormous wooden box. The Manhattan Bridge caisson, on the New York City side, had an area of seventeen thousand square feet..... Its floor was the riverbed itself. In essence, the pneumatic casson was the largest diving bell ever built. There's also description of Vanderbilts, Astors, and NY society which contrasts with some descriptions of more ordinary lives - in particular for instance of the workers in the caisson who are subjected to 'the bends' until decompression is better understood. One of those books I'd wanted to read, with a reputation which shrank on reading.

A great personal look at some of the lesser known early Greenwich Village beats, especially the beat women. A close up of Kerouac 57-59 too. Nice writing style as well.

One of the most touching books I have ever come across- this book is an instant classic that I believe everyone should read. All of McEwan's novels center around the inter-struggles of a selected number of characters and in the case of Atonement, he focuses on the intertwining lives of three individuals and the choices that change their lives and the lives of others. Told primarily through the eyes of Briony, she is a child 'possessed by a desire to have the world just so' - a desire that takes the form of writing and the love between her sister Cecilia and the handsome Robbie, son of the family’s charlady The consequences of one day are what set this tale in motion. What opens on Briony’s inability to bribe her cousin Lola and her two useless twin brother s into helping with her play, a sequence of events begins to unfold. By the end of the day, Robbie and Cecilia have discovered they are passionately in love, the twins have run away, Lola has been raped, Briony has accused Robbie of the assault and he has been arrested, and her play fallen to the wayside. When you reach the end, you learn that Atonement is really a novel written by Briony herself, seeking atonement for the mistakes of her past.

I've enjoyed all the Matthew Shardlake books but this was definitely the best, I did not want to put it down. I now know more of the history and stories of Henry VIII times.

Patrick Rothfuss' debut novel is hearty meal to digest. Although I found the beginning a little slow starting, once the actual tale began I was completely engrossed. Our hero Kvothe is far from perfect. He's arrogant but insecure at the same time. However his sheer brilliance and sometimes dumb luck pulls him through his trials. Kvothe as a character is a fully fleshed out living breathing person who I could imagine standing in my kitchen telling this tale. The peripheral characters were not as well crafted, but as a story told in the first person, we really only see what Kvothe things or sees of them. So while others commented on this as a detriment, I'd chalk it up to the first person narrative. As readers, we only see what Kvothe sees. I really enjoyed this book and am eagerly anticipating it's sequels.

“Basement Magic” – Story of a child, her neglectful stepmother, and the maid. “Intelligent Design” – God as a child, and what he made in the kitchen. “The Green Glass Sea” – A child of Manhattan Project scientists visits the Trinity site. “Clip Art” – A transcript of a documentary on the subject of the object that has changed our lives so much. “Triangle” – Horror story on a relic of Nazi policies. “The Feed Bag” – Poem of a childhood memory of eating at a diner. “Flying Over Water” – A child finds that she has a natural instinct for salt water swimming. “Möbius, Stripped of a Muse” – A story within a story within a story … “Time Gypsy” – Grad student travels back in time fifty years to find physics and a very repressive environment for a gay woman. “Be Prepared” – Critical commentary on an Alien Monster's culinary habits. “Travel Agency” – The pleasures of getting lost in a book. “A Taste of Summer” – A visit to the local ice cream store brings a revelation of chemistry. “Ringing Up Baby” – A girl decides her little sister-to-be should have certain genetic features. “Guys Day Out” – Raising a child with Down's syndrome in the sixties. “Portable Childhoods” – A woman watches her daughter learn “In the House of the Seven Librarians” – Ensconced in a former Carnegie library, seven librarians find a child on their doorstep. The stories are good, although a few might be considered trifles. Fortunately, Klages knows how to keep the trifles short and amusing, while letting the other stories breathe and grow. In particular, “The Green Glass Sea”, “Guys Day Out”, and “Time Gypsy” are excellent, while “In the House of the Seven Librarians”, which could have been a trifle, instead is a delightful fable of growing up with literature and the people who know where everything should be shelved. Only “Triangle” is off – the object of horror doesn't really have anything to do with actions of the viewpoint character, and if you subscribe to the “gets what they deserve” school of horror writing, the aim is very off.

The Concept: A former Geisha narrates her life and work prior to WWII. The author's amazing style and voice lend so much to this beautiful tale. His words are so beautiful, and they are so believable coming from the mouth of his narrator. A great summer read for romantics.
