I love all Miriam Grace Monfredo books; after all Glynis Tryon is a librarian!

I really enjoyed this book. It basically follows the pulp detective formula, except he's a wizard. I suspect that a lot of the negative reviewers don't understand the genre they're reading. It's a good old hard-bitten private detective narrative with magic. I thought the characters, while somewhat cliche, were great. The story was engaging, and it had a good wrap up. (I'm not going to rehash what a thousand people have already posted about what the story actually is). This book doesn't take itself too seriously, it knows what it is and it revels in it. If you want a good, light, detective novel with a splash of fantasy, then I'd highly recommend Storm Front.

I read this right after putting my dog to sleep. Don't think I was retaining much at the time due to shock, but I did enjoy the shenanigans of the main character and his on-again/off-again friendship with the fireworks maker/movie producer. Most of all, I loved the dog, though due to my state of mind, I became overly concerned about who was walking the dog when the plot moved elsewhere.

I'm finally happy for reading this book because now I'm aware of the original meaning of the phrase "Catch 22" (which by the way can be considered as a "deadlock" in programming context). It was a long reading and I certainly had problems with remembering who is who because of the too many characters (30+). There is this strange silly humour which made me laugh and a few very strong brutal moments which I think I will remember for a long time. There were moments that made me feel very upset but I guess in time of war the picture couldn't be more shiny.

I was not as impressed by this book as many other were. I did not think amazing that he wrote from the POV of an overweight teenaged girl. I did not become a real fan of Wally Lamb until his next book I Know This Much Is True.

I'm pretty sure that the best way of appreciating and reading Macbeth is not to spend four months reading it in class (ok, maybe only three). I hated this book so much when I read it, but I know that I don't hate the story because I was fine with watching the movie. But my 11th grade teacher just killed it, mangled it beyond recognition, and left it as something to be despised. I think high school teachers should have to pass some kind of test or something before they are allowed to inflict possible irrecoible damage on classics of literature through their piss poor pedeogical methods. The same teacher gave a similar treatment to Jane Eyre, another book I cringe at the thought of but that I know has only been ruined by an awful awful teacher.

Better than book 2.

This is the third John Irving book I've read (also read Garp & Owen Meany). This is good writing! And the plots and characters are (for lack for lack of a better term) so weird! I love that. In this novel, you have incredibly complex characters, with complex relationships, and complex pasts. You have grief, and love, and sex, and anger and sadness. And odd, odd love relationships. Life portrayed at it's truest. The 500+ pages do move along rather slowly, mainly because there is so much to absorb. John Irving does not overdue language or symbolism - it's all in the perfect amounts. Sorry, but the plot is not really summarizable.

Reminiscent of L'Engle's Wrinkle in Time, The Giver is beautiful and heart-wrenching at once. It's easy to write this off as required middle school literature, but Lowry's future-world offers complexity that anyone can appreciate through their own memories and associations.
