I enjoyed the writing for this book and was glad that the story of Rhett and Scarlett went as it did. However, I have a couple gripes with this sequel. For the most part, McCaig's characterizations were spot-on, but I really think he missed the boat with Melanie. She would never have written what he had her write and she wouldn't have said many of the things he had her say. Also, does nothing good happen to people in the South???? I was very near despair while reading this book because so many horrible things happen to so many people! Yes, the Civil War was bad and Reconstruction may have been even more devastating to the people, but I like to read to escape reality, not have more cold, bloody, mean and hateful reality thrown at me! In the end, I'm glad I read this, but if you love GWTW as much as I do, be prepared for some dissappointments.

I found this to be a real page-turner, excellently written and engrossing. At first I thought, oh it's another book about World War II and living with Nazis and I'm sure there's not much that will make it stand out. Was I wrong. The book is expertly paced, the plot points are intriguing, the characters are vividly real, and the ending is uplifting in an odd sort of way--not the happy-go-lucky, all's well ending, but a resolution is reached that makes you feel better for the mother and daughter who are at the heart of this book. There are some truly harrowing and gruesome scenes that make you realize just how desperate daily life was for ordinary Germans living through the Third Reich and the final days of World War II. Because of the very fact that so many of the characters are ordinary people, it makes it easy to put yourself in their situations. Many times I found myself wondering what I would have done. There were no easy answers to these questions. An excellent story, easy to lose yourself in.

Well-written and well-organized, this book lays out a pragmatic approach to nearly all aspects of software engineering. I was somewhat surprised to find that I agreed with the vast majority of the advice. And unlike many sources of similar advice (both digital and print), this book avoids dogmatic rules and methodologies, preferring instead a pragmatic approach (duh) that encourages thoughtful consideration of which of the many rules, techniques, or approaches can best help with the problem at hand. Most importantly, the tips in this book are obviously informed by significant experience developing software. The book is conveniently organized into relatively short, independent chapters, allowing you to read bits an pieces as time allows. The specific content is summarized in several dozen Tips, catalogued on the inside cover (even in the ebook). Normally I hate attempts to digest complex concepts into one-sentence rules, but even the summary includes a few sentences of explanation and links to a fuller discussion inside the book.

Rohan Mistry did abject poverty in India better, Ralph Ellison did social criticism through the eyes of a loner better and Dostoyevsky did discussion of the moral vagaries of murder better. So instead of reading this book you should read those three.
