this is one of those books...you read it when you're young, and its so freaky, and you feel like you're part of a secret club. At least I did, all those years ago when I read it. I have to admit, I enjoyed it. Would I now? I don't think so. But at 12? It was fabby.

INTRODUCCIÓN ¿Las grandes tragedias pueden tener causas simples? Cuando menos suscitan preguntas simples, como si la amplitud abrumadora de un acontecimiento exigiera una explicación global. Ahora bien, las preguntas simples suelen ser temibles; es, pues, comprensible que los historiadores eviten abordarlas y prefieran el estudio del "porqué" al análisis del "cómo". Pero ¿acaso es posible evitarlas realmente? En particular si se trata del genocidio de los judíos de Europa, tragedia inédita que puso profundamente en tela de juicio a nuestra civilización y que aún suscita la reflexión de personas de los más diversos campos. Tres interrogantes se imponen en relación con este tema. En primer lugar, si la aversión -en el mejor de los casos- y la hostilidad -con mucha frecuencia- hacia los judíos se había difundido por toda Europa, ¿por qué la tragedia ocurrió en Alemania? En segundo lugar, ¿por qué, después de 1933, el prejuicio antijudío se convirtió en una suerte de norma de la sociedad alemana que permitió al régimen nazi, cuyo antisemitismo era mucho más radical que el de la población, llevar adelante su política sin obstáculos serios? Por último, ¿por qué se llegó hasta la masacre si otras soluciones ya habían sido evaluadas y aun aplicadas, desde un sistema de apartheid hasta la emigración forzada o la concentración en un territorio periférico? Es posible dar una respuesta simple a estas preguntas. El odio a los judíos: ésa sería una explicación global. Ahora bien, ¿esta explicación es plenamente satisfactoria? ¿Cómo demostrar su validez? Es evidente que el antisemitismo está vinculado con el genocidio; nadie se tomaría el trabajo de poner en duda este hecho; sin embargo, no hay consenso acerca de la naturaleza exacta de dicho vínculo -relación de causa-efecto o vaga solidaridad-. A primera vista, la masacre de poblaciones indefensas, la transgresión de las barreras de la civilización que significó el asesinato de niños, mujeres y ancianos, no pueden explicarse sino por un odio cuya excepcional intensidad abreva en una profunda acumulación de prejuicios. Para aquel que privilegie esta pista, el genocidio aparecerá naturalmente como la consecuencia paroxística de una larga tradición de estigmatización de los judíos en el mundo cristiano. Se enfocará especialmente una cultura nacional, la cultura alemana, que desarrolló desde el siglo XIX un antisemitismo cuya virulencia no tenía antecedentes. Ésta ha sido la tesis de Daniel Goldhagen, quien retoma ciertas obras publicadas al término de la Segunda Guerra Mundial y sostiene que en Alemania la "eliminación" de los judíos constituyó un "proyecto nacional";

No one could ever call Steve Martin inarticulate so this memoir is a musing on his early days at the comedy coal face.Interesting and philosophical at times -- but there's not much there to hook you up with the man behind the weird and crazy guy.The problem is, I think, that Martin stopped being funny when he well and truly put stand up behind him. His collaboration in films that saw his early gems -- especially The Man with Two Brains -- are here presented as a way to survive in the business. But aside from being funny he wants to anchor his wherewithall in a sort of pragmatism by hindsight.So this it seems to me is a constructed narrative to justify where he now may be at and why he no longer does it like the old days. I've read his novels, seen his plays, and of course watched him act -- but outside the weird and crazy he comes across as a bit sterile -- not much there bar for the last joke.Great jokes of course, brilliant takes and memorable performances ( Dirty Rotten Scoundrels and Planes Trains and Automobiles especially) but I get the impression that the passion has gone and a quest for logic now pervades. The turning point he tells us was when he cut his hair....and put the sixties behind him.

Classic existentialism from Camus--it takes only a few hours to read, and it gives important insight into the despairing mind of postmodernism. One could consider the ending thoughts a Despairist's Manifesto of sorts.

If you loved the musical... maybe you'll love the book. :) I read the book before I watched the musical and overall, I do think that the storyline for the musical is better. However, I felt that the book was written very well and is a great book for adults. It does have a few cuss words and explicit scenes so I'd recommend it for adults only.

2015. Angels return and a 14 year old is responsible for piloting a biomechanical weapon...Mmm...war graphics not my particular cup of tea, and there was something highly sexualized to the depictions of the women in this book that didn't jive.
