This is a collection of essays written by James Fallows for the Atlantic Monthly. They begin in 2000 or 2001 and end in 2006. Though he's added footnotes with updates, the essays are published in their original form. And that's what is infuriating about the book. Whatever your politics, once you see what information a reporter without access to classified information was able to put together--and the extent to which he was able to accurately predict the specific brand and duration of problems we're now facing in Iraq before we ever went to war--it will make you feel even more sick that the current administration decided to take the plunge. But it is nice to know that the current "quagmire" was caused by specific people who intentionally ignored a plethora of warnings. Nice to know in the sense that it is perhaps possible to avoid situations like this in the future if we elect the right political leaders (though they won't likely have many options when it comes to Iran...see the last chapter.)

This was well written. In addition to East of the Moon, West of the Sun, it reminded me of Beauty and the Beast, and Cupid and Psyche. I guess it wasn't my favorite because I've heard it told so many different ways before.
I was first introduced through a another book, "King Dork." I expected a lot of the same. And I got it. What "Catcher" is is really a bunch of observations about the world as seen through the eyes of a teenager. And to be honest, I got pretty sick of it. The main character, Holden Caulfield, is 16, and just got expelled from his prep school. It isn't the first time he's been expelled either. The story tells about just a few days in his life as he walks throughout New York. There's really no plot, as I've mentioned earlier, this is really a bunch of observations from an angst-ridden teenager. Here's one of my favorites: "I went down to a different staircase, and I saw another "Fuck you" on the wall... If you had a million years to do it in, you couldn't rub out even half the "Fuck you" signs in the world. It's impossible." p. 202 Most of his observations are very angst-ridden. I wanted someone to knock some sense into Holden: his angst is almost overbearing. It's kind of annoying really. I liked "King Dork" better than this, because while that too was angst-ridden, it at least made me laugh.

This is the best book i have ever read. It winds the tale of love, betrayal, forgiveness and redemption. The retelling of the story of Hosea in a more modern setting. this story shows how Gods love never gives up, never gives in, and never fails.

'The gulf between books and experience,' intoned Samad solemnly, 'is a lonely ocean.'

Picked this up for $2 today at Borders. I like that it says it's "A Perfect antidote for Melancholy"

This book follows the life of Victoria, a girl who is brought up in foster homes. Each chapter flicks between the past and present building a picture of this damaged young girl. She finds herself on the street, struggling to overcome her past. A local florist discovers she is talented, hires her and this helps Victoria find a way of doing this through flowers, by using the Victorian language of flowers. She meets someone and this starts an exchange of flowers, Victoria gave Rhododendron – Beware; He gave Mistletoe – I surmount all obstacles; Victoria gave Snapdragon - presumption ; He gave White Poplar bark – time. This starts an interesting relationship. Victoria’s dysfunctional past continues to create problems for her and a particular painful secret from her past as well as a life changing event in her present, forces her to decide whether to allow herself a second change at a new life.

I'm still reeling from this one. Much less character driven than other 9/11 novels (_Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close_ or _The Emperor's Children_) and much more philosophical. In many ways, the novel is a treatise on the importance of remembering -- keeping trauma and pain real and personal so that they cannot be corrupted for propaganda's sake. This review cannot be anything but incomplete as I'm still wrapping my head around this one . . .
