I have liked almost every Dan Simmons book I've read, so I'm biased, but this was very good. If you like bleak arcticscapes devoid of hope and tales of improperly tinned food with disastrous consequences, this is the book for you. I really liked it. I can't write anything better than "I liked it" in these reviews.

I may get heavily criticized for saying this, but this book is probably this generation's Catcher in the Rye; and just like that novel, I think there's a window during which one must read it to fully appreciate its message. I liked what I read, don't get me wrong. I loved the quest for answers to the afterlife and the obsession with last words. The search for something larger than oneself, bigger than the life we live now - a "place" as wide and open and impossibly distant as Alaska when you're trapped in a small Alabama town. It was beautiful and deep, just like the characters. I wasn't expecting the plot twist and it made my jaw drop; I am still somewhat in disbelief. I guess it had to be done but it gave everything an unfinished feel, which I guess is life, right? I couldn't connect with it but so much because being the age I am and having traveled in search of the mythical Alaska (places, people, philosophies), I've never found that kind of comfort and have gotten jaded along the way. The optimism of the characters reminded me of my own youth, which brought back good memories of how I thought the world and people would be so different in places other than where I grew up. So that just ended up disappointing me and sending me into a shame spiral of what I've become. Now I'm just Looking for a G&T. John Green, you'd better be buying.

This book was a delightful surprise to me. I went into thinking that I was not going to enjoy it at all and expecting a "read that been there" kind of reaction. What I got was a fresh fairy story with wonderful characters and lots of action and twists. This is a great book for young readers who enjoy a bit of fantasy. Girls especially will like the book.
