Although this book is not a direct sequel to The Giver, it is loosely connected by showing another possible society that could arise out of the same struggles in that book. There are a number of similarities between the two, despite the differences in their level of technology and their family structures. I found the characters and the society described fascinating, although I was not as spellbound as with the earlier novel. Whether that is attributable to the writing itself or to the fact that I was already prepared for an alternative perspective, I can’t really say. I would definitely recommend the book, especially for the middle school/high school level.

Each of the books in the series have a bit of a different feel to them. I like that a bunch. If I remember correctly, this one takes place back in Cornwall, during a festival. Here, Jane, Barney and Simon from the first book finally meet Will from the second book. I really enjoyed watching their relationship develop (it's not all smooth sailing!). Anyway, Jane gains the favor of the Greenwitch (I won't say too much about this part, but it's neat), and the mystical being helps them track down the grail (those things are always being stolen from the Dark), and also makes a prophecy that sets the course for the next two books. This one is shorter than the others, but it works. Jane really comes into her own, here, and the water scenes are brilliant. For the millionth time, this is a wonderful series of books.

This is one that I listen to each Christmas. MUCH MUCH better than the movie based on this book. I actually hated that they made a movie from it. I enjoyed the take on the Christmas festivities and the feel good ending.

I read this because the content sounded like it would be interesting and fun. I had never read any Palahniuk before and I figured this was a good place to start considering I did not want to read something that I had already seen the movie for. I do like the way he writes, but this book went from OK, to having potential, to just plain lame and disappointing. I feel disappointed because I think he could have done a lot more with it and two thirds of the way through, I just felt like he copped out. I was waiting for the author to get his head back in the game and surprise me, but the novel just went downhill fast. He did do a good job of creating suspense at the right time (which would be when Diary started to get painfully redundant and boring), but then did virtually nothing with it. I will try another of his novels because I really do like the way he writes, but this was just such a downer.

Before a friend gave me this book to read, I don't think I ever heard of Rick Bragg. He has a unique way of putting feeling into his writing, making the mind's picture very real. This enjoyable autobiography includes a very colorful, but homey and poignant, description of life as a poor kid growing up in Georgia, and of his ties to his family -- and especially to his mother -- that just wouldn't break, no matter how far away from home his job as a news reporter took him. An inspiring read!
