I enjoyed reading this story about 11-year-old Roz, whose mom relocates her, her brother, and her baby sister to a small town to get away from her drunken, abusive father in the 1960's. Although she knows her dad was frightening at times, Roz wants to remember all the good things he did for her and hopes one day her family can be together and whole again. Tillie is an eccentric, elderly woman who makes herself at home with Roz and her family shortly after they arrive in town, and even though she's a little odd, they soon find she's just who they need in their lives. Then there's Mara Nightingale, a friend from school who befriends Roz. As their friendship grows they share everything with each other, including their deepest secrets. They make a pinky-swear promise to one another that they will pray for each other, that God will make both of their greatest desires come to pass one day. Ann Tatlock is a new author to me, but I will enjoy reading more of her books. This story held my attention and had my interest from the first page. It was a fast-paced read and hard to put down. I would've enjoyed the book even more if the faith aspect had been stronger. It was rather weak for my personal taste, but I still highly recommend it for the plot and storytelling. I appreciate Bethany House Publishers for sending me a free copy for review. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions expressed here are my own.

This review was first published on my blog, Literary Exploration Well I absolutely loved Matched and this is a great sequel to it. Some parts are kind of slow, and there are a lot of flashbacks, but overall I'm really happy with it. I've been awaiting this addition to the Matched trilogy for so long, I just about died when I finally got my hands on it! I love that it's written in alternating POVs (one of my faves if you know me!!) between Cassia and Ky. It really gave me great insight into Ky and who he is and what drives him. Cassia is definitely a different character from Matched, she's a lot more mature and a stronger woman in general. She always knows what she wants and what she needs to to do survive and eventually find her way to Ky. I really admired her, although she makes a couple decisions that were pretty stupid. Ky is Ky. It was nice to learn more about him, and what makes him tick, but I felt like he wasn't as exciting as I needed him to be. I have an insane love for bad boys, but that just isn't Ky. I wish we had more face time with Xander because I think I've switched teams. The writing seems more elegant and mature in Crossed, which I felt was appropriate because the mood definitely changes into one that's a lot more mature. There's a lot of death and destruction in the novel, and some more mature themes are introduced. Plus the way Cassia's grown is sort of displayed through the writing. I'm still a little confused about some things though. Like, who is the enemy? Who is the Society? Who is involved in The Rising? Hopefully some of these questions will be answered in the final book, but I'm a bit confused right now. Also, I'm still wondering what an Aberration is? And an Anomaly? I don't really understand those terms very well, maybe I just missed something? Oh well.. Overall, I really enjoyed Crossed but I feel like it was a bridge novel between Matched and the final one in the trilogy. I felt like I didn't get much information out of it, but it set up the last novel really well. If you loved Matched you're definitely going to enjoy Crossed and if you haven't read either, then you better get your hands on them!!
