Man Lonneke _onnekeman — Well, not so blown away by this sequel to "Plainsong", in part because it is incredibly sad in parts, no resolution of some of the family problems, and not as much pulling together as a caring community in this one. The MacPherson brothers are front and center in this one and are 2 of my favorite characters EVER! Story is again set in hardscrabble Holt, CO, with people searching for affection and a sense of family in all the wrong and right places. The family situations are sometimes so dire that I wanted to leap into the book, slap a few characters, and straighten everyone out. I hope to get to the Skype interview with the author at Cary Public later this month to see if he is planning a third book, because he really needs to tie up some of the loose ends!

Jean Philippe jpkalonji — Third in the "Raines of Wind Canyon" series featuring the youngest brother. He is the most unsettled and guarded of the three brothers. Disappointed and hurt from past relationships, he has determined that he will pursue his successful investments and reap the harvest of years of hard work as a private investigator while traveling and "playing" with the "arm candy of the moment." A very readable and compelling romantic suspense novel with action, surprises, colorful characters that come alive as the story progresses. I really liked this book.

Paul Vorbach pvorbachb55f — I enjoyed reading this story about 11-year-old Roz, whose mom relocates her, her brother, and her baby sister to a small town to get away from her drunken, abusive father in the 1960's. Although she knows her dad was frightening at times, Roz wants to remember all the good things he did for her and hopes one day her family can be together and whole again. Tillie is an eccentric, elderly woman who makes herself at home with Roz and her family shortly after they arrive in town, and even though she's a little odd, they soon find she's just who they need in their lives. Then there's Mara Nightingale, a friend from school who befriends Roz. As their friendship grows they share everything with each other, including their deepest secrets. They make a pinky-swear promise to one another that they will pray for each other, that God will make both of their greatest desires come to pass one day. Ann Tatlock is a new author to me, but I will enjoy reading more of her books. This story held my attention and had my interest from the first page. It was a fast-paced read and hard to put down. I would've enjoyed the book even more if the faith aspect had been stronger. It was rather weak for my personal taste, but I still highly recommend it for the plot and storytelling. Andrew Silva _ndrew_hance_ilva — This was a fabulous murder mystery! Generally, I don't go for mysteries as I figure out too soon who the culprit is and how they did it, but in this case - even though I still knew who did it slightly before the main character, the resulting plight of said main character kept me on the edge of my seat while it all played out. Kudos to Alan Bradley for keeping me hooked after that moment of realization, and I will be looking up his other novels to read as well!

Ahmed Osama ahmadosama2012f3cb — the first portion of this book was interesting the second portion really sucked, although I was drawn in, so figured I would finish it the book is all in all a super religious tome (ok, it is based on a second flood in the end days, so, no one is fooled by this going in), but all in all indicative of the radically fundamentalist religious belief of even DOCTORS who are prt of the hipster THE BELIEVER / McSweeney's crowd what's so cool about the rejection of reason of the sort fomenting continual wars?
