This author captures perfectly a soulless cosmopolitan perspective that is devoid of any real human spirit, a kind of materialism that transcends actual materialism. People as objects. Experiences as collector's items. One's life not just as a brand, but a very chic one. The uncanny and constant undercurrent of a self-awareness of the emptiness of it. The jealousy and yearning that that runs through the book is the same kind you might feel in a Manhattan boutique, where you don't know exactly what you'd actually buy, not even one individual thing, but you long for everything in the store, and the aesthetic it represents. It is hard to know what kind of experience would change the perspective of the people who inhabit this world, because it’s all there already, children, art, all of it. Realizing this makes it impossible to ever see how the characters in this world could escape it. My uncle and I once talked about how watching people you don't care about be miserable is the worst kind of movie, and this book is 100 times worse than Revolutionary Road in that regard. The book itself is clearly a piece of currency in this world, and on my shelf it feels like dirty money.

Such a great, interesting novel to read. Someday I'm going to reread it now that I'm familiar with Foucault's panopticon and his views on bodily punishment.

I loved this book! Very unique story and even the time traveling stuff made sense throughout the whole story rather than the story changing (i.e. like in the movie The Lake House). Quick and very interesting read.

good read
In search of new authors I was directed to Lewis Nordan. Not my normal type of fiction but an excellent, visceral writer. Interested in reading more of his work.

I enjoyed reading this book and wanted to see what happened. It reminded me a lot of the Pretties and Uglies series. I am excited for the next book. It was a super easy read and enjoyable.

** spoiler alert ** Move over Harry Potter(view spoiler) Edit #1: I'm going on an edit spree! Too be blunt...fuck this book! (view spoiler) THE BAD The Angst Everyone was whining about something. Stop it! Jace Whiny Edward Cullen rip-off asshole. Clary Still useless. Alec Whiny, jealous emo who has been ruined by Clare. Magnus Poor victim of Clare and Alec's jealous emoness. Alec and Magnus Seriously, you had me wait half the book before they even appeared?! And they're the only reason I keep reading this series. Sebastian/Jonathan Why did Clare have to ruin two of my favorite guy names? If there is a Tobias or a Caleb, I will scream. Thankfully, Alec doesn't ruin the name Alexander. Clare-style Sex Cassie, can you please stop havign your characters start to get hot and heavy and then pull out end their moment of passion? It's annoying as Hell! The Ending I @#$%ing hate cliffhanger endings! THE GOOD Camille. That's it. Okay, Maia was okay. And I didn't hate Isabelle. And Simon's storyline was interesting. But that's it! Fin.

I've only read more recent essays by Sacks in the New Yorker, and it was such a pleasure to explore his seminal work. Dated, sure, but w/in its context, so revolutionary. And I thought it was very approachable. Brain research is so interesting! (If that's your cup o' tea.)
