This book was okay; I guess I just kept hoping for more. More character development, more interactions, more sex, something! I did finish it, and I do think it resonates with the typical gay adolescent experience, but would probably be more enjoyed by younger readers.

This was a fun and surprisingly enlightening read. I wasn't sure what to expect and I have to say that I gained more from this book than I expected. It's a bit of a "small changes can add up to big results" phenomenon. While I may not pursue my own formal happiness project, I have already found myself putting some of Rubin's tenants into practice. I appreciated her straightforward and honest writing; it was easy to relate to Rubin, even though my circumstances differ. The Happiness Project was a great idea on her part.

Midnight Marriage by Lucinda Brant is a Georgian romance inspired by true historical events. In Midnight Marriage, a young girl of only twelve and a rebellious youth are wed in a ceremony conducted in the dark of night. Then the youth is whisked away by his father, and the young girl returned to her bed. She does not clearly remember the incident as she was drugged. Years later, as an adult, she meets him again but does not realize she is wed to him. He wishes to win her heart without her knowing of his noble title, and on his own merits. They wed again as adults. The rub comes when she learns his real identity and realizes that she has been deceived. There is plenty of subterfuge in this tale, with several subplots skillfully woven throughout. This well-written historical romance clearly illustrates the author’s talent for story-telling. It is engaging, authentic, and comfortably paced. The dialogue is believable and stays true to its period. The settings, outfits, and behavior of the characters are portrayed in delicious detail. This is a book I would highly recommend to any readers who like a sweet historical romance rife with intrigue and complicated by societal expectations of the time.

This was a good story exploring themes about family dynamics, adultery, memories, and race relations... but as a mystery novel, I didn't find it particularly suspenseful. The main mystery is that of what happened to Callie's baby, whose body was never found. But there was no build up of suspense, and I didn't find the revelation to be satisfying either. This was my first Lippman novel and I have another one on my to-read shelf, and I hope that one will be better.

Despite all the great reviews for this one, I found it somewhat disappointing. It's probably both brave and stupid to take on a book that's more or less about 9/11, despite having a traditional plot wandering through it; no matter how well one addresses the topic, people are always going to find something that's not quite right, or find a reason to be offended. For me, the problem with the book is that it's too on the nose at times -- telling us how screwed up Artie has been since 9/11 is a lot less interesting than just letting him act, and allowing readers to draw their own conclusions from the way he behaves, and Nadelson is a good enough writer to have taken on the latter approach. Unfortunately, she does both, and the telling is sometimes so obvious and heavy-handed that it makes you cringe. That said, the plot is well-drawn, and several minor characters from previous volumes move to the forefront in this one, imbued with tremendous complexity and sharing Artie's confusion about his life and his world.
I usually love historical fiction and expected to love this book, but it left me cold. Jahanara's voice didn't ring true to me. I was not surprised that it had been written by a man, who, by his own admission, found it difficult to write in the first person as a 17th century Hindustani woman. I did not feel the same way about Sayuri, the character in Memoirs of a Geisha, who felt very authentic.

OK...so the journaling thing got set by the wayside and I haven't been able to keep up on it, so, I'll just give some insight into the book. This is an amazing book nonetheless. Here goes... If you are someone who has been introduced to Christ for the first time, this book may not be the first book you'll want to read. Only because it's very theologically based and deep in it's exposition. Wonderful to read, but can be very hard to understand at times. I don't believe that God opens our eyes to that deep of an understanding of the reality of Christ's suffering until later in our Christian life. I think it is more likely that God first lays the groundwork for us to understand His mercy and grace in our lives so that later He can open our hearts gradually to an awareness of the deep and intimate reality of how His grace and mercy came about...through Christ crucified.

I picked this book up because I was feeling like I needed an 'easy' read, something I could get through quickly with minimal brain functioning. I was pleasantly surprised. Although it did not fulfill my requirements for a quick read, Wicked did leave me thinking seriously both about the contents of the book and its position as a 'meta-text'. I would totally recommend it to anyone with either an interest in politics and the position of the subaltern, as well as an interest in the position of fan fiction and the reinterpretation of narrative in a postmodern era.

Reread April 2013. Original read (and review) Oct 2011-- Amazing! Stephenie is one of my top 5 favorite authors. To me she captured those teenage feelings of confidence yet self doubt prefectly.
