"It was love at first sight, at last sight, at ever and ever sight." (p. 307) What is there to say about Lolita that hasn't already been said hundreds of times over? Yes, the content is disturbing and occasionally brutally uncomfortable to read, but I'd be lying if I said I could look away. I couldn't. "And I shall be dumped where the weed decays, and the rest is rust and stardust". (p. 292) In fact, more than a handful of times I found myself rereading whole paragraphs, sometimes pages, two, three or even four times. Such is the absolute beauty of Nabokov's use of the english language. Never before have I read a book so gorgeously written, so witty, so breathtakingly lyrical. Midway through I started to mark pages containing a particularly striking quote with mini post-it notes. "A shipwreck. An atoll. Alone with a drowned passenger's shivering child. Darling, this is only a game!" (p. 19) Certainly I'll be rereading this again many times over, not only to study Humbert Humbert's tragic affection for nymphet Lolita, but primarily to linger over Nabokov's majestic prose. As an aspiring author it makes me slightly distressed to know I'll never paint a novel even 1/1000 as eloquently as this.

Some of the stories were really boring. I'd like to say unicorns won!! I mean seriously?? They're unicorns-magically healer who fart rainbows. Still as much as I hate to admit it, the zombie stories were waaaayyyy better.

2.5 Stars This is a pretty good story that centers around Sydelle and Wayland North, and their journey to stop a war. There were many questions that were left unresolved by the end of the novel, and I had high hopes that the epilogue would cover them, but no. Was North ever cured? I would really like to know. All in all this was a book that was good for time filler. I didn't find myself fantasizing about what the characters were doing when I wasn't ab;e to read, and I don't miss them now that they are gone. Not a bad first effort though, and I might consider reading more from the author eventually.

Good premise. Good start and nice central characters...but brought in a few too many characters from other books for my liking as it started to FEEL like one of a series instead of standing completely on its own. A nice read but not amazing.

I love books of all kinds. But especially OLD books. I don't mean beautiful, pristine, don't they look lovely sitting on the shelf, old books (though those are nice, too) but worn, used, LOVED old books. Writing in the margins? Even better. What could be nicer than to see what some long-ago person thought about this passage or that paragraph? To me, this is the best part of an old book, the tingle of previous hands and minds that have enjoyed it before me. They are HISTORY in your hand. Oh, if only they could speak, what they could tell you about their previous owners and the times they lived in.... Obviously, Geraldine Brooks gets this about old books, because she has written a wonderful novel about exactly that idea. People of the Book is the tale of one book's journey (inspired by a true story). In the spring of 1996, book conservator Hanna Heath is sent to Sarajevo to stabilize and conserve their museum's famous Haggadah, a Jewish prayer book traditionally used in family prayers. This particular Haggadah is special. It contains brilliantly executed illuminations that are extremely rare in early Jewish books. The book has been hidden away by the Muslim museum director during the recent war and its condition needs specialist care. When she inspects the Haggadah, Hanna finds several clues that will help her to uncover some of the book's volatile history: an insect's wing, mounting marks for clasps which are missing, a stain that looks like wine, salt crystals and a single white hair. "It was as if I was up against some genie who lived within the pages of old books. Sometimes, if you were lucky, you got to release him for an instant or two, and he would reward you with a misty glimpse into the past. Other times, pouf-he'd blow it all away before you could make sense of it, and stand there, arms crossed: Thus far, and no farther." Behind each of these clues there lies a story, a piece of the history of the book and these short tales are woven into Hanna's search and her own personal journey. Considering the tumultuous eras that this book has survived, its existence today is something of a miracle and a testament to the myriad people who came in contact with it. People who, whatever their religion, had the respect and strength of character to preserve something precious. In People of the Book Geraldine Brooks has given us a peek into what the Sarajevo Haggadah's history might have been like. I loved this excellent and beautifully written story. It was hard to put down and I recommend it to anyone who is interested in well-written historical fiction, contemporary fiction or mysteries.

Another in the vein of Mysterious Benedict Society... meets X-men... meets Savvy... meets The Wizard of Oz. Kids who have special talents sure don't get a break. I liked this book. The first few chapters seemingly have very little to do with the rest of the book. The perspective skips around all over the place; sometimes we're focused solely on Piper McCloud (aka, the Girl Who Could Fly) while at other moments, we're focused on the supporting characters. Actually, at one point, Piper disappears for a good amount of time, and the author just glosses over that. I don't quite believe all of the motivations of the characters. Abnormal personal growth seems to go hand in hand with an abnormal skill set. The conclusion seemed hastily added on with fairy tale endings to many of the storylines. A lot was left unexplained, priming the audience for... a sequel? Of course. Uneven, but entertaining. Kids will like it, I think. I enjoyed reading, but after any kind of analysis, the gaping holes become bothersome.

I'm not good at writing reviews so I will be brief. This book scared the poop out of me. If you like true crime and true horror than this book is for you. The reader is brought on a investigative roller coaster where the author shares his findings with you and makes you feel like you're part of the investigation with the inclusion of reproductions of letters and photographs from the case. A really good read.
