so far, Oscar Wilde's writing is much more tedious than I'd expected. I'm actually listening to this as an audiobook. Final verdict: dull, dull, dull. I listened to the end, only because I wanted to see if it ended the same way as the Angela Lansbury movie (as the movie changed some other significant bits). It did. How can such a witty author of bon mots be so tedious and dull and long-winded? Story: A; Execution: D

This book had some great reminders. Some of the suggestions were presented in such a way that they really clicked for me. Parts of it I found some what repetitive, but overall I'm glad I read it.

A great collection of short stories. The settings shift between India and Indian immigrants in the U.S. Very well written and informative.

I'm not into poetry books but some of these poems were quite touching. His insights into how men think were great and had me at HMMMM..... and lastly some of this made me LOL and some of it was quite sexually hot *whew!* Having met the author and his muse in person helped me to appreciate this work even more.

Cornelia Funke(Author of Inkheart and Inkspell) does a very good job at capturing children's emotions. She totally caught me by surprise at the end, but in a good way. I never really knew much about venice and all its little nooks and alleys until after I read this book. It makes me want to ride on a merry-go-round too ;D

"'How come she ain't got no problem defending herself from that crazy man? But she chase after Miss Hilly like she just begging for abuse?' I [Minny:] say this even though Miss Celia getting her feelings hurt is the least of my worries right now. It just feels kind of good to talk about someone else's screwed up life. 'Almost sounds like you care, ' Aibileen says, smiling. 'She just don't see em. The lines. Not between her and me, not between her and Hilly.' Aibileen takes a long sip of her tea. Finally I look at her. 'What you so quiet for? I know you got a opinion bout all this.' 'You gone accuse me a philosophizing.' 'Go ahead,' I say. 'I ain't afraid a no philosophy.' 'It ain't true.' 'Say what?' 'You talking about something that don't exist.' I shake my head at my friend. 'Not only is they lines, but you know good as I do where them lines be drawn.' Aibileen shakes her head. 'I used to believe in em. I don't anymore. They in our heads. People like Miss Hilly is always trying to make us believe they there. But they ain't.' 'I know they there cause you get punished for crossing em,' I say. 'Least I do.' ‘Lot a folks think if you talk back to you husband, you crossed the line. And that justifies punishment. You believe in that line?’ I scowl down at the table. ‘ You know I ain’t studying no line like that.’ ‘Cause that line ain’t there. Except in Leroy’s head. Lines between black and white ain’t there neither. Some folks just made those up, long time ago. And that go for the white trash and the so-ciety ladies too.’ Thinking about Miss Celia coming out with that fire poker when she could’ve hid behind the door, I don’t know. I get a twinge. I want her to understand how it is with Miss Hilly. But how do you tell a fool like her? ‘So you saying there ain’t no line between the help and the boss either?’ Aibileen shakes her head. ‘They’s just positions, like on a checkerboard. Who work for who don’t mean nothing.’ ‘So I ain’t crossing no line if I tell Miss Celia the truth, that she ain’t good enough for Hilly?’ I pick my cup up. I’m trying hard to get this, but my cut’s thumping against my brain. ‘But wait, if I tell her Miss Hilly’s out a her league . . . then ain’t I saying they is a line?’ Aibileen laughs. She pats my hand. ‘All I’m saying is, kindness don’t have no boundaries’” (311-312).

The best cookbook I've purchased for the library this year, imo. Great, easy, delicious (and light!) recipes.

It was an okay book. It really wasn't my kind of book, I got bored with it and it's rather predictable. I knew what happened before I even finished the first chapter so that shows how predictable these kinds of books are. I was glad when I get the book finished, it just wasn't my kind of book there wasn't enough excitement in it for me. The 1950's are much different then they are today when it comes to pregnancy of teens. Now a days when a teenager gets pregnant people really could care less, we just see it so often anymore that we don't really pay attention to it. But in the 1950's if an teenager got pregnant they were forced to get married to the baby's daddy or if they didn't they were shipped off to have it with no support from their family's it was sad really.

just read this book for class. didn't know anything about the aboriginal people of australia, but now i have a huge heart for this country and the oppression of the aborigines from the british settlers. pretty heartbreaking to read, and there is a movie based off of it as well that i recommend also.

A rich, rewarding read. The novel follows young Corsican immigrant Chjara Vallé (who follows her illicit love) from her homeland, via Paris of the late 1700s, to New England. The key to Chjara's life lies in her recognition of, and delight in, her sensuality, which includes playing the glass harmonica, an instrument so arousing to its listeners, it was banned in Germany at the time. Her hedonistic tendencies set her at odds with the new Puritanism in the new America. I love Dorothee Kocks's lyricism; her vivid, engaging characters and gutsy evocation of scene. Reading this novel I'm reminded that each of us can choose to live, too, at the edge of our senses. A book to savour, cherish, and share.
