Not only is this my favorite science fiction novel of all-time, it's among my favorite fiction books period. It's a fascinating examination of the never-ending struggle between the will of the masses and the determination of the individual to change the world, or in this case, the universe.

This follow-up to "Over the Edge: Death in Grand Canyon" isn't nearly as fascinating, perhaps because Grand Canyon attracts more people who are strictly tourists and fail to comprehend its inherent dangers, while Yosemite hosts more adventure-seekers who (more probably) are conscious of the risks involved. Contains the same grammar problems as the first. Some descriptions of massive falls and homicides are particularly gruesome.

I'm actually re-reading this collection and so impressed with it. There are some real classics: Charles Baxter's "Gryphon" Amy Tan's "Rules of the Game" Susan Minot's "Hiding" that every short story writer should know, as well as more obscure, but quality works like Alice Munro's "Turkey Season" and Stephanie Vaughn's "Dog Heaven." One thing that makes this anthology special is the variety of narratives - voices, eras, points of view - and it is rare to find a collection so diverse that is not simply a show of the kind of stories the editor likes. Nicholas DelBlanco is quoted as saying we experience every major emotion by age four, from euphoria to fear of death, and this collection truly shows what rich material childhood experience is.

Death in Venice is a philosophical examination of the plight of the artist. Aschenbach--the fallen artist--has lost his soul in his pursuir of success. He goes on vacation, where he falls in love with Tadzio, a young boy. As cholera overtakes Venice, Aschenbach slips deeper and deeper into his love affair. This novella is a really masterful combination of action and philosophy, seemlessly interwoven through Aschenbach's character.

Wicked cool! I guess you'd call this fictional photography. The Fool & the Vanisher uses photos, illustrations, and a small amount of text to tell a story. It's a historical paranormal mystery. The highlight are the amazing images. Yes, I know they're doctored, but they're still super cool. If you're not into spending the cash on this book and don't check out books from the library, just pick it up at your local bookstore and find a quiet spot for a minute. Reading this book takes 30 minutes, tops. Enjoy.

A wonderful read, if you love music, rock and roll and a good yarn. I am a Stones fan, but was surprised at how articulate, funny and insightful Mr Richards is in this book. I didn't know a lot of the inside history and found it mesmerizing. I loved the stories of him and Mick, his family and the other groundbreakers of the 60's, plus I learned a lot about music. I ended up being very fond of Mr. Richards at the end of this adventure.

I read this in an afternoon for a book club. Mostly I find her parenting style disturbing--she has no qualms with manipulating, name calling and insulting her children. Wanting your children to succeed is one thing, but if they have to be the best at everything, then everything in their life becomes a competition. Your a failure unless you are the best. I think that is a horrible way to go through life. That said, there are some things I agree with. Kids need to work hard to become good at something, and that means working when sometimes they don't want to. There is value in learning to work hard to be successful. I also hate the idea that "kids will be kids," and that you just can't stop them from experimenting. I think learning from others' mistakes is a vital tool, and I also think that if you have high expectations for your kids they will be much more likely to reach them.
