misterames
Mister Ames misterames — Good detail on technique. Not a scheme orientated book.

Kate Saunders _ate_aunderz — Had to put this off because uni came up... but it was bleak, bleak, bleak and good, good, good. Coal-mining in the French industrial revolution evidently wasn't any more comfortable than it was in Britain.

brunomastrocolla1031
Bruno Mastrocolla brunomastrocolla1031 — I tried to start this book at least 3 times (usually at 1:00 AM) without much success. On the 4th try (during the day), I understood what it was talking about! The story is a bit slow at the beginning, but it picks up after that. I really liked Lightsong - he really would be upset at this, since he worked so much at being antagonistic and irrelevant. I disliked princess Vivenna - she worked too hard at being liked, and managed to come out as annoying and arrogant. The ending was a bit abrupt, maybe there will be a sequel to see what loser princess will do.

kavitraa213
Kavitraa Paramaguru kavitraa213 — This book has a very interesting collection of subjects, where we can see math, or science applied in our day-to-day routines. Even when crumbling a piece of paper and throwing it to the basket. My only regret is the lack of depth used to explain them, but on the other hand the chapters are hence smaller and easier to read.

khalid_e_93cc0
Khalid Bari khalid_e_93cc0 — ** spoiler alert ** Story of Tan-Tan, a girl from the terraformed world of Toussaint, whose father carries her into transdimensional exile with him after he commits a crime. Written in a mix of English and Anglopatwa, with a thematically-related "'Nansi story" at the beginning of each section. Pro: Really well-written, overall. The patwa made it hard for me to read, of course, but I enjoyed it once I got used to it. Everything was really well described, and I loved the 'Nansi stories. I also thought the dynamic between the prison colonists and New Half-Way Tree's native douen people was interesting: it had obviously deliberate echoes of colonial racism. Con: I thought Antonio's character shift was way too sharp-- even the explanation that the trip up the Half-Way Tree "changed him" wasn't sufficient for me. I had the impression that the story had changed as it was being written, but that Hopkinson didn't edit the earlier part to reflect that. (In the first pages, for example, Antonio is torn up because his wife and his "best friend," Quashee, are having an affair. Within a few dozen pages Quashee has become just one in a long succession of younger men Ione's been seeing, and not Antonio's "best friend" at all.) I also thought that the alien life on New Half-Way Tree was way too recognizable to be convincing. (Bipedal reptiles? Really?) Neutral, but important: The Goodreads blurb is misleading. This is not a fantastic adventure about a bandit queen on an alien planet. It's a story about rape and incest and the survivor's emotional journey. It's an important story, but not at all the one I thought I'd be reading. Four stars for writing quality and concept, but I have to confess that I only skimmed the last third of the book.

malitsky
алексей малицкий malitsky — I read this in an afternoon for a book club. Mostly I find her parenting style disturbing--she has no qualms with manipulating, name calling and insulting her children. Wanting your children to succeed is one thing, but if they have to be the best at everything, then everything in their life becomes a competition. Your a failure unless you are the best. I think that is a horrible way to go through life. That said, there are some things I agree with. Kids need to work hard to become good at something, and that means working when sometimes they don't want to. There is value in learning to work hard to be successful. I also hate the idea that "kids will be kids," and that you just can't stop them from experimenting. I think learning from others' mistakes is a vital tool, and I also think that if you have high expectations for your kids they will be much more likely to reach them.

_nalicia_onkanen
Analicia Honkanen _nalicia_onkanen — OK so it's another chick lit, but occasionally I like a brainless, fun, funny tale especially when the main character is overweight, sarcastic and naive.
