I read this when I was researching a paper on alternative family books. It is a very cute story about two male penguins who adopt a baby penguin that has been abandoned by its mother. It's actually a true story, too; although I forget which zoo it happened in. It did create some controversy, with the whole two male parents thing, but read it aloud if you're brave.

This was my Mom's book when she was growing up. I kinda relate to the girl.

The plot of this book is to complex to even attempt to go into but it has a dead historian recording events of the Trojan war for the gods, strange humans on a seemingly distant future earth, a machine race of explorers living on the outskirts of the solar system, and Shakespeare. Believe it or not they all go together in not such a surreal way as you might think. The characters are well rounded and evolve with the story. I don't know that it has important moral implications in the world but it was very entertaining to read.

This seemed like a good "beach" read when I started but it eventually evolved into a trite, kind of silly romantic novel. I'd still say it's ok for a vacation read but then again, why not read something good!

On a re-reading streak, and after having just finished Gopnik's other essay collection, thought I'd take myself on a vacation of the nostalgic imagination. Serendipity strikes me again: upon opening the book the other evening, I found my boarding pass to the flight that officially relocated me to Paris. If that was not enough, it just so happened that this slipped out from between the pages exactly eight years to the DAY- February 26- that I took the trip that changed my life forever. Does this sort of thing happen to many others? ------------------------------------------------------------ Read just upon my own return to the United States, Gopnik's own experiences touched feelings of romance, confusion, fantasy and frustration that were (and still are) quite tender...there's just something about the tale of an American in Paris that never loses its freshness of spirit, its fluttering heartbeat, its wide-eyed world-weariness.
Lance Henriksen has lived a difficult, crazy, and often exciting life, and more than qualifies for his own biography/autobio. I had the chance to meet Mr. Henriksen at a horror film convention this past summer, and he was one of the friendliest people I've ever met. I don't normally get too fan-boy-ish about meeting actors and whatnot, but as one of my favorites since I was kid, since my first viewing of "Aliens," it was a real pleasure to shake his hand and get his autograph. The book is good. The pages fly pretty quickly, and the reader gets a good idea of where Lance's head was when he made some of these films, and where he is now, looking back on a life filled with achievements and some pretty big obstacles (i.g. being thrown in the naval rig, having no reading skills whatsoever, well into his twenties). The book is written in a manner that allows Henriksen's co-author to provide the bio, the narrative, taking frequent breaks for paragraphs in Henriksen's own words. It's an interesting style, and one I haven't seen before in biographies, but I'm not completely sold on it. I think I would have enjoyed it a little more if the whole thing had been written as a bio or an autobio. When authors put out autobios with a co-author, it doesn't make it any less of a biography, and that kind of straight-forward writing makes for a more seemless read. That isn't to say hearing these anecdotes and thoughts coming directly from Henriksen isn't rewarding. He talks like a regular person, like someone you might get a beer with; a regular, ordinary guy who's had a pretty incredible life.

This was quite a work and study of WWI and WWII and a family's journey through that.

A well-drawn portrait of a Finnish girl living in Washington state in the 1800s. Great characterization, but not necessarily a compelling plot.

Excellent as always. Armstrong tells the best stories. This one was about Eve who was a witch in life and is now a ghost. It's about her struggle to protect her daughter Savannah in any way she can. She realizes that it is really hard to do as a ghost.
