My mother gratiously purchased this fine tome for me a few years back and it proceeded to sit on the aforementioned mother's shelf in her room for those intervening few years. The inevitable boredom of July prompted me to go about the house browsing for things to read and this immediately presented itself. I flipped it open and lethargically started reading the first page. Before I knew it, it was hours later and I was completely enveloped in the story and stunning life of Miss Gertrude Bell. I am still awed by the things she accomplished and saddened by her eventual and premature demise (I won't ruin the surprise for you). She is just amazing and, despite these different times, still as timeless and inspirational as ever.

I find the young James Bond much more moral, admirable, and impressive than his adult counterpart. Higson follows the feel of the James Bond novels with their action and intrigue, but I feel he has created an even better character. The young James Bond doesn't have the gadgets, but uses intellect, hard work, and determination to get himself out of tough situations. Also, young James is good with the girls in a much more respectful and appropriate way ;-). Hurricane Gold is an exciting and almost entirely implausible adventure based in Mexico. A fun and entertaining read--great for ages 12 and up.

one of three great books i read for my Deviance class. this is half creative writing, half theory, which i think is a great idea. the book presents a wide spectrum of feelings on the sex industry. the creative writing (short stories and poems) are written by sex industry workers, from street-corner hookers to more "legitimate" escorts to no-contact strippers. there are sound arguments for and against sex as an industry, and "the oldest profession" as a... well, profession. makes you think.

Voyage in the Dark...when I read it, I was attracted to the fact the heroine was my age. But yeah, some girl who is part of a travelling theater troupe of some kind and is also really from the Caribbean (like Jean Rhys) and is very cold all the time (I think her name may be Anna?) meets some guy. He's really nice to her for awhile and then discards her. She has an abortion and you get the distinct impression this will be the first of many abortions.

I looked over the 'reader reviews' and there was one about Natalie Portman. Wtf? I suppose she's in a movie version... weirdos. Anyway, I picked this book up because it was part of Oprah's Book Club, and let's face it - Oprah has some good stuff (and some not so good stuff). This is a fabulous book for all those Oprah watchers to start out with. Poor, pregnant girl gives birth at Wal-mart, for god's sake. And Sam Walton visits her in the hospital! (aww!) Anyway, it's flat and all, but I don't mind so much. It was a good read. If an author can pull off the above, then they got something goin on. Maybe Oprah watchers will feel a certain communion with the Wal-mart check outs 'girls' in the future. And then we can all live as one.

Excellent read. I really enjoyed how there were 3 different main narrative perspectives. A lot of the story stuck with me - it was very well written!
