I loved this book so much, and I read it AFTER I'd seen the movie. I though the movie was fantastic (esp. the music) but the book proved to outshine it. The story of a geisha is told in an impeccable fashion with unmatched grace that transports you into the story. Satsu's life is full of different experiences and situations than we will ever experience. Her mysteries add to her allure and make you want to find out more about her story. You are guaranteed to love her story and want to re read it again for the sheer matter of comprehending it all. If you haven't already I highly reccommend watchiing the movie AFTER reading the book. But doing it the opposite way isn't so bad either. You MUST check out the soundtrack. It is one of my all time favorites. Composed by John Williams (composter genius) and featuring the work of Yo Yo Ma you will be transposed into the world of geishas, mysteries, and a lost art.

this is the only byatt i've actually been able to get into completely, and man, i got into this one. the elegance of the language, the shifting times, the parallels and the differences - it's masterful and beautiful and leaves you aching in all the right places, and yet so fulfilled. the movie was dismal. the book reminded me of arcadia in all the best ways - except as a fully fleshed out novel, instead of a play.

i really like david sedaris, and gave this collection three stars b/c it contains the "santaland diaries" which if you haven't read it you should. absolutely hilarious. the other stories in the book were not as good as that one. i plan to check out some of his other collections and hope for better. the best place to find "santaland diaries" and other funny holiday stories is his Holidays on Ice. parts of that one were so good i laughed out loud and then read it to greg.

** spoiler alert ** FirstReads giveaway-thank you! This is a book that can cross the YA and Adult lines with no problem. Both sets of readers will come away happy. One of the book's topic is one that I have not thought much about yet-sexting. I'm too old and my children are still too young (thank goodness-it seems) for me to worry about it. I found the book's topic fresh and current and was happy to read about something I'd not yet covered. The book is a good way to get parents and kids talking. The law aspects were terrifying and show how fast society is moving-too fast for law to keep up. The characters are very likeable and believable. The storyline provides depth so that the reader will stay interested. The ending was perfect and I won't say any more. I'd say my only quibble was the jump Amelia made from being a virgin (and a very inexperienced one) to taking nude photos and sending them. I couldn't keep up there and needed some more bridging. I know that Amelia discusses the artistic side of the pix, but when they are first taken and emailed that doesn't seem the motive. It was awkward for Anthony to send and take the pix, as well. This was my first novel by Therese Fowler and I'd definitely recommend it and would read another by her. I appreciated her tackling this topic and have read that it is close to her heart.
