I had very mixed feelings about this book. I loved the first three stories in The Boat, especially "Meeting Elise", about an artist reuniting with his daughter after eighteen years of separation. When I got to "Halflead Bay", about a teenage boy coping with his dying mother while trying to avoid fighting the school bully, I wondered if I was even reading the same author (and why the hell he stretched this shitty story out over 69 pages.) I also disliked "Hiroshima" and thought the last two entries were mediocre. Nam Le seems to be confused about what he wants to write about, and also what style he wants to write in. And the only story that came close to having an ending was the final one, which I suppose is appropriate...

This was an ok read. I felt it was longer than it needed to be. I liked the first half, but it dragged a little the second half. It did have a Danielle Steele-feel to it and was a little predictable, but overall a good story about an enduring best-friendship.

This book is quirky, Douglas Adams was probably quirky though I never had the pleasure of meeting him. I have paid my respects at his grave in Highgate Cemetery. This book is a fabulous, ironic, imaginative and wild ride through the universe. The work of a creative genius.

Firsthand accounts of the Cultural Revolution in China that leave you sick to your stomach. Neighbors robbing/killing/raping neighbors, millions waving around the Little Red Book...the stories are incredibly unnerving, and reveal a tortured history of a modern state that has gone shamefully underepresented in scholarly and popular literature. Folks, there was a full-fledged civil war in China not more than 40 years ago. And if the book tells us anything, it's that it could happen again.
This book is a very interesting glimpse at how cultural-Indian customes affect individuals experiences in the culturaly different America.

What things are steadfast? Not the birds. Not the bride and groom who hurry in their brevity to reach one another. The stars do not blow away as we do. The heavenly things ignite and freeze. But not as my hair falls before you. Fragile and momentary, we continue. Fearing madness in all things huge and their requiring. Managing as thin light on water. Managing only greetings and farewells. We love a little, as the mice huddle, as the goat leans against my hand. As the lovers quickening, riding time. Making safety in the moment. This touching home goes far. This fishing in the air.
I'm kindof a sucker for Steve Almond. I loved "My Life In Heavy Metal" so much that I still think about the title story. I was recently at the SF Public Library browsing the new books section and this was propped up. I'd picked it up a couple of times in the bookstore and wondered about the process and how Almond and Baggott decided on this whole thing. It's pretty interesting but the letters each become like little short stories and not so much like letters that people (who aren't writers) would actually write to each other.
