This book read fast. I was able to grasp facts and feel about a place I have visited once for a couple of days, mostly Montreal and Quebec City. It has an interesting history being the only province of Canada that is mostly French and francophonic. I had no idea that Quebec, the province, was twice the size of Texas. I would like to go there again. I enjoy Canada. It is a lot like Utah to me, where I grew up and still live.

Holy crap this graphic novel was violent and creepy. I think we can all agree there is something really eerie about puppets. I'm reading a lot of people talk about the artwork, which in itself is awesome, with the little fragments of drawings and real photographs that go so well with the theme of memory and recollection, but let's just stick to the story for a second here. I feel sorry for the unnamed narrator. The Mr. Punch and Judy show definitely parallels the life of Uncle Morton, like in the beginning where he encounters the puppets and Mr. Punch throws the baby off the stage and then later on we find out the Uncle Morton may have been thrown out the window. The Child can get more truth about his family from watching the bloody, violent, gruesome puppet show but he never gets the full truth of anything about his family. The adults in this story tend to ignore the Child, or push him away. I do believe even in real life, some people tend to think because children are young and innocent, that they must also be stupid. Children they see things and try to make sense of the world, and they will take into account when you lie to them, which will affect them until adulthood. I particularly loved the part where the child tells the reader "adults are threatening creatures." to a kid that is so true.

Read this book, (and then be very selective of where you go to dinner).

I got stuck! so many books pass before my eyes, I fall into the next before the one is finished. I'm back on this soon.

The edition that I read had a forward written by Mr. Burgess and a previously unreleased (in the US) final chapter. If you have the choice, I highly recommend picking up such an edition: the introduction was brilliant, and really helped me understand the themes of the novel; and the last chapter really changed my understanding of the book.

Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close is told from a young boy's perspective who lost his father in 9/11. The book captures his journey through family secrets and grieving over his father. As I was reading, I could easily picture a little boy telling this story. He was consistently sarcastic, thoughtful, and naive throughout the novel. His sarcasm kept me laughing through what was really a very sad story.
