Montage of conquests. *favours Byron & sister's moor-loitering fictionalised selves*

the truth behind manic depression, a touching biography of her son's life. the first real story of depth I can remember reading as a young adult.

If you liked "Flags of Our Fathers," you must read "Flyboys." Bradley does a great job of not only detailing the lives and deaths of the U.S. Flyboys during WWII, but also takes a look on the other side -- that of the Japanese soldiers during that time. I know I gasped out loud at some points and cried in others. All in all, another knockout for James Bradley.

I wanted to rank this book higher but a shift in tone/story/plot midway through has me hesitant. What started out as a stark, scary, emotional story hit a wall and turned into a different book. I'm still a bit puzzled as to why the author chose to approach the change to the story in this manner.

In all seriousness, having thought about this for a while several days after I finished the book I only have two things to say. If you don't like haunting post-apocalyptic reads this book is not for you. It's all the things people say about it: bleak, depressing, dark etc. However, it is also compelling to the very last word, ambigious in parts and a brilliantly executed book. What McCarthy doesn't say is almost as important as what he does, so much is left to the imagination and that is why it's haunting. It is also a book which oozes talent and ability, his words are so measured it's surprising he ever finished editting and redrafting. Essentially it's about a man and his son as they journey towards The Coast on The Road, there's nothing much to see, they don't encounter many people and essentially not much happens but this is precisely why I found the book so fascinating, McCarthy takes the world we know, redraws it until it is unrecognisible and compells you to read to the end. The book does need a health warning, it will take over your life until it's finished and then you will want to find the nearest person who has read it and talk and talk and talk. You've been warned!!

Just getting started. So far so good, laying the ground work of characters. Need a lighter read right now! Okay finished this book and while I liked it the middle got long. Am really anxious to hear what book club says. Hope all my friends will be there!

I first read 'Goodnight Mr Tom' when I was teenager and I decided to read it again when I recently watched the tv adaptation of 'Goodnight Mr Tom' with John Thaw as Mr Tom, which I enjoyed. I also enjoyed the book the second time as much as I did the first time, this time around, I am older (and hopefully wiser) and the book meant more to me, especially the development of Willie from a frightened young boy to a happy, healthy and contented boy who has found the love he deserves and sees himself for what he is worth. Tom Oakley is a brilliant character, as with Willie, you see a change, Tom finds himself when Willie enters his life, he has not been responsible for anyone apart from his himself and then his beloved dog, Sam for 40 years but with Willie he becomes the father he never had the chance to be to his own son (who was also named William). A incredibly powerful read about family, friendships, loss and love, a book that shows that strength can be shown in different ways. A joy to read, highly recommended.
