This was one of those books I wasted a day over with no regrets. I would do it all over again in a heart beat. Great character development, great bag guys, great plot, and great suspense all in 230 pages.

It's kinda schmaltzy... okay, REALLY schmaltzy... but I like this book in spite of myself. The characters aren't very real, but they serve more as an allegory than as real people. It's not great, but I enjoyed it anyway... almost in spite of myself.

Assassination attempts, political plots, mystery, and court intrigue – this historical is an action packed fast read. The romance between John and Susanna was the icing on the cake. Both of these characters had intriguing backgrounds and both of them had interesting positions in King Henry VIII’s court. I would have liked to have read more about Susanna’s craft and what type of work the king might have put her to task creating--and maybe one or two less attempts on her life. The Reader’s Guide at the end was a bonus, but I really enjoyed the Author’s Note. I wish I had read that first, as I hadn’t realized Susanna and John were actual historical figures, and that they did marry. I think Ms. Diener did an excellent job weaving fact and fiction, and I look forward to reading her next book.

This a good mystery. The main character got on my nerves though. It makes me wonder why women do the stupid things that we do. I wouldn't dare do things that the main woman did like so many others as well. I coudn't feel sorry for her. Annabel meets this man in her travel office and she arrange a travel package for him. She has a romantic dinner with him, have sex and gets pregnant with his child. She doesn't know much about him. When he comes back from his trip, she is 2 months in and don't want to have an abortion. The guy marries her because he doesn't want any child of his to go without a home and father. Her many actions cause more pain and death. She is about to find out who and what her husband really is.

This book was both amazing and sad. It was remarkable that the author was willing to practically give up her life to care for an owl; a commitment that lasted nineteen years. However, I found it incredible sad at the same time. She is a better and more patient person than I could ever be. It's an amazing book and anyone with any inkling to learn about owls and real love should read it. Warning: the end will break your heart. The author and the owl go through rough times.
