I read this book on a "chicken bus" in Guatemala, winding through the volcanos and mountains. I read the first line and couldn't stop. Anything I think to say about this book will sound trite, and it is anything but that.

I had no idea what this book was about going into it. I had heard that it was about the relationship between a boy and an older woman and that Kate Winslet starred in the movie version (which I have not seen). It was so much more than just some book about a boy falling for an older woman. It may have been a small book but it packed a powerful punch. I loved this story. I was sad that it was so short. I wanted it to last longer.

One of my childhood favorites, and a book I love to share with my students.

This book contains 9 short stories based on the theme of known-ness. Beyond that central theme, the stories have nothing in common with each other except that the characters from one might name-drop characters from another, or in at least one case, claim to run into another character. All the stories have a somewhat melancholy tone to them. While the first story interested and amused me greatly, I became less and less interested as the book went on. The bleak tone became too weighty, as I started wishing for a positive turn or a happy ending. The characters, too, were unlikeable. Even those that seemed concerned about other people were written in a way that they still sounded self-preoccupied. All in all, I suppose this is interesting as a study of variations on a theme, but otherwise I found it tiresome.

Hrm. On the plus side: I liked both Rikki and Amiri; Amiri is a black African man who is the hero but not exoticised by his ethnicity; there is an acknowledgement of the fact that Africa is a very diverse continent of many different peoples and countries. On the negative side: the book kind of fizzled to a close rather than ended; there's some rather squirm-inducing gendered violence; Liu nods to the fact that there's more to Africa than exotic diseases and war and violence, but doesn't really show it; and there's an astonishing lack of female black characters considering that this book is set in the Congo. (There is one fairly significant black female character, but she's also problematic.) Great as it is to see interracial PoC/white relationships in romance novels, I wish that Liu would also write some PoC/PoC romances, whether interracial or not.

I really love Flavia de Luce. She is such a quirky character. I can't wait to get more of this series!

I liked this one a lot more then firelight.. I don't know why I've been loving the second books more than the first but really enjoyed this plot much more.. And leaving you on a cliff hanger like they did is craziness.. How are you supposed to wait to see what happens? Ugh!

A little long and slow in parts - which is why I think it took me over a year to finish... It does inspire one to run...

the proteus chapter is perhaps the most incredible thing written in the english language. the way he plays with words is remarkable. then i sort of zoned out and came back to the last chapter - which, if you love molly bloom, is worth it all. also, joyce manages to make one single word SO signficant. it's incredible. (i wrote a final - 15,000 words - on what his use of "yes" means in the last chapter. and it was easy.)

This is Dewey's story, which is sweet and heart-warming; and it is Ms. Myron's bio. Her story and Dewey's was interwoven, of course, but I could have done with less of the town history and Ms. Myron's. But it's an easy read and all-around pleasant.

Vanderpool'un Kansas'ın Manifest kasabası, hikayelerin gücü ve bir kızın ev ve aile arayışıyla ilgili sürükleyici romanından gerçekten keyif aldım. Kendimi Manifest dünyasında kuşatılmış buldum. Ama Newbery'i kazandığını ilginç buluyorum. Yapmamam gerektiğini biliyorum, ancak diğer kazananlarla karşılaştırdım ve olduğu gibi, birçok Newbery öncülüne dayanabileceğini sanmıyorum.
