This is a modern day Sleeping Beauty story that doesn't end when he wakes her up, instead the couple struggles to get to know each other and their cultures, which are hundreds of years apart. They must learn how to love and support each other in trials and danger and how to make marriage work. I enjoyed this book for the Russian folklore and unique twist on a common fairy tale. But it was slow going at first and took a while to get into. The overall plot was a bit weak and too many things I had to accept without adequate explanation, and the hasty ending was unsatisfying.

This book was for mother/daughter book club. My daughter (11) loved this book and finished it about a week earlier than I did. I finished it today and really enjoyed it. I plan on reading the rest of the series, book club or not. It is a great premise for the book and I hope the rest of the series lives up to this one. It is definately written for the pre-teen croud so it is a pretty straight forward telling with just a few twists, but engaging nonetheless.

it's obviously a classic, but this book is very entertaining at the same time, and a very easy read.

If you're desperate for a short history of Australia and can get past Clark's smarmy writing style, this one's for you.

From my Amazon.com review: Nothing earth-shattering here... I was drawn to this book because of its interesting title (and I wanted to see if she had a concrete answer for it), but it ended up teaching me nothing, other than the fact that Dowd is a well-connected individual, quite the name dropper. "My friend at Newsday said..."; "a friend from the Village Voice...,"; "a friend of mine who's a reporter for so and so...." etc. This quickly became irritating. And I already knew that men prefer to date their secretaries, not their bosses. That men are intimidated by smart women. That men want a woman with a lower IQ but a higher body temp. GENERALIZATIONS of course, but still true to some extent. All I really wanted to read was a book about basic feminism, how women can make it on their own, not have to get married, be happily single in a pairing society. But no, this was still about smart women looking for serious relationships. The political aspects were boring, I thought. If I'd wanted to know so much about Ms. Rodham Clinton, I would have bought her biography or something. A useless book, but I liked the cover art.

In my efforts to read Agatha Christie's books chronologically, I had to read this book a little bit out of order. This was written (or at least published) after "The Secret of Chimneys," but I finished this book before "Chimneys" since I had it on loan from the library's inter-library loan. They don't allow renewals for ILL! Regarding the book itself, this was not my favorite Poirot, although it does have classic buffoonery from Hastings. The plot is spaced out over almost a year's time, which is a bit different from the Christie's I have read recently. Many of those take place over a much shorter period of time, with perhaps a trial taking place a little while after most of the action occurred. In "The Big Four," almost every chapter occurs a month after the previous, and there are several seemingly unrelated mysteries covered. I say "seemingly" because Poirot realizes these mysteries are all from The Big Four.

What a long, strange trip it has been... with flashes of humor, convulsing and convoluted mythology, treachery and loyalty twisting back on each other like snakes, and at long last, some measure of peace for a world that has lost none of its strangeness but just a bit of its peril. Robson does a good job bringing readers up to speed at the start of DOWN TO THE BONE (with prophetic, faerie beer, of all things), but even with the bare bones of the conflict laid out, I can't say if new readers would be able to catch up to the complex emotional lives of these characters without starting at the beginning. So much of what brings Lila, Teazle and Zal and their support crew to this end of days is as slippery and inevitable as a maelstrom, sucking everyone down and together into a cataclysmic confrontation. As changeable as these characters are, there are intimate moments of humor and pathos that completely won me over. Robson does a wonderful job interweaving the trickery of her paranormal creatures into the story without tipping over into "arbitrary”. I don’t know if I’ve ever read a book with so much complexity and forgiveness worked in to the plot, in the most interesting and believable way. DOWN TO THE BONE brings all of the surface stories together, creating a satisfying resolution to the adventure portion of the story, even as I know I will still be piecing together the mythology of these worlds in the future. KEEPING IT REAL and DOWN TO THE BONE have the benefit of bracketing this almost overwhelming series, and I think they would remain my favorites for the clear introduction and resolution each has to offer. Upon finishing the Quantum Gravity series I feel a little dazed and completely wrung out, but definitely glad I followed this roller coaster from start to finish. Sexual Content: Several sex scenes, references to threesomes.
I'm currently reading this for the second time. Absolutely love this book. Again the one I currently have is a library book. As with Angels Blood, I'm on the hunt for my own copy of Archanel's Kiss.

I was kind of hoping this would take place after T'Pol's pa'nar started, as it seemed like an interesting concept, but overall, an enjoyable read. Not the best star trek book/story I've read, but not excruciating, either. characterizations were pretty much spot on.
